Duties

The Manager of the Howell Mountain Market directs all phases of store operations in a manner designed to obtain/maintain maximum sales and margins, as well as controlling labor and other operating expenses and ensuring the store meets targeted projections through effective utilization of personnel and resources available; all while supporting PUC’s mission and ensuring a positive customer experience (for students, employees, and external guests) through quality products and services.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Promotes and enforces university policies and well as local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Promotes a high level of customer service to ensure that customers experience prompt and courteous service, and that complaints and other feedback are adequately addressed.
  • Is strategic about objective decisions regarding work procedures, inventory allocations, and new product purchases.
  • Responsible for maintenance of prompt and accurate checkout service through supervision of front end personnel.
  • Is directly responsible for the profitability of the store and works diligently to ensure that budget and financial goals are met.  Works diligently to provide accurate reports and financial projections/forecasts.
  • Keeps a careful watch on labor costs, ensures that proper scheduling is in balance with sales and operating expenses; and makes adjustments where needed.
  • Partners with departmental managers and oversees scheduling, cash balance, store bookkeeping, pricing/markdowns, and sales and pricing initiatives.
  • Keeps up with markets and adjusts prices appropriately and on a regular basis.  Conducts pricing comparisons on all key items by periodic shopping initiatives, and utilizes other resources to remain competitive.
  • Works to keep the store well stocked and appealing to customers and works with departmental managers on rotation of products to ensure high quality and freshness of products.
  • Controls inventory, ensures that damaged/spoiled products are disposed and tracked according to local and state guidelines.
  • Is responsible for keeping the store clean, safe, and in good order (including all front of the house, back of the house, storage areas, and outside and surrounding areas).
  • Utilizes resources to secure products with highest profitability while keeping in tune with customer trends.
  • Interacts routinely with manufacturers and sales representatives to evaluate vendor promotions and store needs/goals.
  • Conducts regular store audits.
  • Creates and/or implements innovative and appropriate in-store displays and signage to attract interest and promote merchandise.
  • Ensures that all store equipment, machinery, and fixtures are performing optimally (including coolers, refrigerators); and informs/works with appropriate parties (internal or external) as needed for maintenance or replacement.
  • Is effective with promoting and guiding all personnel to comply with cash handling, checks, and credit card protocols processing/limits.
  • Maintains the POS system, alerts IT of necessary compliance/operability factors, and communicates with staff with related updates and training of such tools.
  • Leads the store’s efforts to comply with Red Flag Rules and other compliance areas.
  • Works with departmental managers on pre-employment (hiring/interviewing) and separations, with the guidance and support of the Human Resources department.
  • Seeks to be well informed of personnel manners through regular department manager meetings.
  • Maintains high standards of employment morale and promotes an atmosphere of cooperation.
  • Conducts regular training for store employees.
  • Responsible for accurate invoicing, billing, and accounting procedures.
  • Complies with all emergency, safety, and hazard guidelines including disposing of broken glass, plastic containers, and liquid products properly.  Trains staff members on an ongoing basis on safety protocols. Chairs the store’s safety committee and ensure that all personnel are safety-conscious and adhere to the safe method of performing their duties.
  • Reports on major safety and security breaches as appropriate.
  • Implements and maintain an effective fire and safety program within the store in accordance with university policies.
  • Performs all other reasonably business related functions as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications

Combination of education and experience will be considered.  College degree in related business field with five years of supermarket/retail management experience is preferred.  Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge and background in management and operations.  Must demonstrate analytical and technical skills to calculate financial figures, create budgets, and handle sales transactions with ease.  The ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form is required.   Must be able to read and understand income statements and have some basic accounting skills to detect and troubleshoot errors. Proficient computer skills are required (including all Microsoft Office Suites and excel spreadsheets), as well as the ability to use other office equipment necessary for this position.

Compensation

Salary; Base salary of $69,000 to $75,000 depending upon qualifications and experience. Eligible for performance bonuses. Competitive benefits package.
