Duties

The Landscaping Director provides strategic leadership, long‑term planning, and operational oversight for all campus grounds, landscaping, and outdoor environmental stewardship. This position ensures that the college’s physical environment is safe, sustainable, aesthetically excellent, and aligned with institutional values. The director manages staff, budgets, contractors, and projects related to campus grounds, while fostering a welcoming and visually cohesive campus experience for students, employees, and visitors.

Desirable Qualifications

Strategic Planning & Leadership

  • Develop and implement a long‑term campus landscape master plan in alignment with institutional priorities and sustainability goals.
  • Establish policies and standards for grounds maintenance, landscape design, irrigation, arboriculture, turf management, and seasonal operations.
  • Lead the strategic vision for campus outdoor environments, including beautification initiatives, outdoor learning spaces, and environmental restoration.

Operational Management

  • Oversee daily operations for all landscape‑related functions, including planting, pruning, lawn care, irrigation systems, and tree maintenance.
  • Ensure campus grounds remain safe, clean, and visually appealing year‑round.
  • Develop and enforce maintenance schedules and quality standards.

Staff & Contractor Oversight

  • Recruit, train, and supervise landscaping staff, including student employees.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and external contractors involved in landscaping, tree services, irrigation upgrades, and specialized environmental projects.
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, professional development, and accountability.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the department budget, including payroll, equipment, supplies, water usage, and contracted services.
  • Recommend capital investments such as equipment upgrades, irrigation modernization, and tree management systems.
  • Oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and services in compliance with college policies.

Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship

  • Lead initiatives to improve water conservation, native planting, soil health, and energy-efficient irrigation.
  • Partner with other employees or student groups on environmental projects and outdoor learning opportunities.
  • Ensure practices align with ecological best practices and support the campus’s environmental commitments.

Campus Collaboration

  • Work closely with Financial Administration, Facilities Management, Campus Safety, Athletics, Student Life, and Academic Departments to coordinate landscaping support and project planning.
  • Support campus events by ensuring grounds readiness, signage placement, and seasonal enhancements.
  • Communicate proactively with campus leadership about landscape conditions, weather impacts, tree health, and infrastructure needs.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, and local regulations related to groundskeeping, chemical use, equipment operation, and environmental management.
  • Oversee safety training and emergency response procedures for landscaping staff.

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with supervision and project management.
  • Experience in agriculture and a demonstrated affinity for horticulture.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and budget management skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education or campus environments.
  • Experience with irrigation systems and relevant software.
  • Familiarity with turf maintenance.
  • Proficiency with work order systems.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and oversee the use of landscaping equipment and machinery.
  • Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities for emergencies or campus events.

Compensation

Hourly; $24/hr to 29/hr (plus denominational benefits, depending upon qualifications and experience)
