Duties

The Assistant/Associate/Professor of History assumes responsibility for assessment, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of classroom experiences.  These experiences are designed in such a way as to facilitate critical thinking and foster student attainment of course objectives.

Course Development: 

  • Assess the need for classroom learning experiences that facilitate student attainment of course objectives.
  • Plan, develop, and implement classroom learning experiences that facilitate critical thinking and student attainment of course objectives.
  • Evaluate classroom learning experiences in light of student attainment of course objectives.
  • Prepare and revise course syllabi.

Department Responsibilities:

  • Participate in maintaining a collaborative working environment within the department.
  • Participate in establishing and implementing departmental goals and objectives.
  • Provide input into departmental budget planning and participate in maintaining departmental and program fiscal accountability.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, work groups on a voluntary or appointed basis at the departmental, college, and professional levels.
  • Demonstrate adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the departmental level.
  • Participate in the interview, selection, and hiring process of potential faculty candidates.
  • Participate in the evaluation of departmental faculty as requested.
  • Support research activities in the department
  • Contribute to the enhancement of campus and community life.
  • Serve as lead teacher in the event a course instructor is in progress with a Master’s degree.
  • Recognize the need for and support the integration of professional education standards into the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the overall education program and related activities.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and participate in the development of college and faculty standards.
  • Participate in developing departmental and program standards that enhance overall quality.
  • Participate in providing quality student services including academic advising.
  • Meet with individual students to understand and resolve problems, referring for appropriate support and help as necessary.
  • Schedule regular student conferences to review progress in program.
  • Evaluate student performance.
  • Encourage students to embrace to concept of life-long learning.

  • The successful applicant will also have demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program and attract research funding from competitive research funding schemes and/or industry.
  • Candidates should demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills consistent with the highest quality of teaching and learning, together with evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
  • Excellent Computer skills (Microsoft Office), and database management skills.
  • The ability to work on multiple work products, while prioritizing as necessary.
  • Must have an expressed commitment to Jesus Christ, the teachings and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and an SDA church member in good and regular standing.

Education and Experience 

  • Master’s Degree in History or closely related field required, PhD preferred, from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, ideally including experience in innovative pedagogies and/or assessments, and/or online or technology-assisted teaching.
  • Applicants must have a willingness and demonstrated capacity to teach outside their area of research interest.
  • The successful candidate should ideally have a minimum of three years’ relevant post-doctoral experience.

Compensation

Salary; $54,382 - $76,314 (plus denominational benefits, depending upon qualifications and experience.
