Pacific Union College is pleased to announce Paul Castillo as the new head coach for the Pioneers women’s volleyball team. Castillo accepted the position in late May.

Castillo assumes the role from is Brittany Brown, who served for six years as both coach and athletic director. Brown will now solely focus on her duties as athletic director, overseeing the athletic department and all PUC intercollegiate programs. Currently, PUC offers varsity basketball and cross country for both men and women, in addition to men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

“I am thrilled and confident handing the program over to Paul. Not only does he have a great understanding of the game of volleyball, but he is coming to PUC invested in continuing to build a program of character-driven athletes,” says Brown.

Previously, Castillo worked as an assistant coach at Santa Rosa Junior College, a position he held for 11 years. He helped coach the team to six state championship appearances and three state championship runner-up finishes. In addition, for two years he was an assistant coach at Cardinal Newman High School and head coach for one season of the 18s team for the Empire Volleyball Club in Santa Rosa. He was also the head coach for the Sonoma State University women’s volleyball club team for one season. That year the team took fifth place in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation.

A Redwood Adventist Academy alum, Castillo studied psychology at Sonoma State, graduating in 2010. He also played for the men’s club team in 2008 as well as in 2010, when the team was the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation champion.

Though PUC officially starts school on Monday, September 26, practice for the Pioneers women’s volleyball team began August 10. The first game of the season is shortly after on August 23, followed by several away matches. The first home game of the season is scheduled for September 6 against William Jessup University.
