Angwin, CA -The Pioneers women’s basketball team opened their 2009-10 season by hosting the Raiders of Southern Oregon University. Returning all but one of their starters from last year, the Pioneers were eager to get their new campaign off and running. The Raiders entered today’s game having split their first two games of the season, a big win over Holy Names University on Friday, and a loss to CSU Maritime on Saturday night. The Raiders used a strong second half to pull away for an 82-44 victory.
Both teams played at a frantic pace during the first ten minutes of the game, with each team looking to speed up the play of the other. The Pioneers fighting back to answer every run the Raiders threw at them. But the Raiders were able to take a 13-point lead into the half, using a strong second half surge to pull away from the Pioneers, who used much fight and tenacity till the final buzzer.
The Pioneers were led by Vanessa Felder who finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, converting on nine of her 18 field goals. Devin Tinney pitched in nine points and five rebounds for the Pioneers.
Jacki Speer led the Raiders and all players with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals, in the win. Lindsey Scheffler and Krystal Smith each added nine points for the Raiders.
The Raiders push their record to 2-1 on the young season. The Pioneers open up at 0-1. The Pioneers women’s basketball team will travel to San Rafael, CA to face their former conference companions at Dominican University, next Wednesday, November 18. Pacific Union College Women's Basketball program has been adding some depth to their young team. Gabby Alvero, Jalissa Engelage, Lacey Mahan, and Lara Canders are four new recruits that should make an immediate impact on the program.
Gabby Alvero is a 5'4 guard from British Columbia, Canada. During her senior year at Riverside Secondary School she averaged over 9 points and almost 6 assists per game. Gabby is also a great student. She has been on the honor roll since 6th grade and looks forward to pursing her dream of going to medical school and becoming a pediatrician. Gabby is the ultimate team player and we are looking forward to watching her in action this year.
Jalissa Engelage is a 5'7 guard from Diamond Springs, California. Actually Jalissa is not a stranger to PUC. She was recruited last year to play for the women's program, but decided to focus on her studies and take her freshman year off. But after getting comfortable, Jalissa has made a strong push to put herself right back into the mix. She came to us from El Dorado Academy where she averaged 10 points per game. Her athleticism and quickness will be a great addition to the team this coming year.
Lacey Mahan is a 5'10 post player from Folsom, California. Lacey played basketball all four years at Sonora High School, where she was a consistent contributor on the court. She has always had a passion for basketball and is very excited to continue to play at the collegiate level. She is a fiery competitor that should add a nice mix of enthusiasm and skill to our program.
Lara Canders is a 5'6 guard from Concord, California. Lara is another transfer student who played her first year of basketball at Moravian College in Pennsylvania. But after one year decided to return to her native state and play closer to her home and family. During her senior year at Ygnacio Valley High School she averaged over 15 points and 3 assists per game. She was named MVP, team captain and all-league first team. She was also the leagues leading 3 point shooter and was second in league scoring over all. PUC looks forward to having a very formative offensive weapon like Lara on their team this year.
Head Coach George Barcenas is excited by the additions to the team and is looking forward to seeing their contributions to this year's team. "We expect these players to help us immediately and make an impact as we try to reach our program goals. We look forward to another exciting year of Pioneer Basketball at PUC."
