Pioneers Athletics

Players of the week

We are starting a new feature here on the Pioneers Athletics website. In an effort to highlight our student athletes, we are devoting this page to recognizing those athletes that had stand-out performances during the previous week.

Week of September 27-October 3

Men's Soccer
In what has been tabbed one of the most (if not the most) exciting soccer matches in the young history of the men's soccer program here at PUC, Jonathan Osorio's goal with 29 seconds to play in the match gets our "Pioneers Men's Soccer Player of the Week". It should also be noted that even though Osorio was credited with the goal, junior forward Bucky Voigt passed the ball that led to the goal but was not credited with the assist in the official stats. The Pioneers went on to play William Jessup University, to two scoreless overtimes, with each team settling for one point in the standings with the tie.

Women's Cross Country
We would also like to recognize Kelley Hawkins for her performance, in what was her first ever competitive running experience. Out of nine runners in the event, at the Pioneers Invitational, Kelley placed first. The senior from San Marcos, CA, has attended PUC since last fall but did not decide to participate in the cross country program until this year. Kelley will be able to test her skills against a larger field, when the team travels to San Francisco this Friday to run in the SF State Invitational at Golden Gate Park.

Women's Volleyball
Junior outside hitter Heather Jacobson, gets our "Pioneers Women's Volleyball Player of the Week". Her 14 kills, 14 digs, five blocks, and three aces, led the Pioneers to their first victory since September 23, 2006. Although the drought was long it is now over and this young talented team led by Jacobson is hungry for more. The Clarksville, MD native has led the Pioneers in kills in all eight matches this season. With such a team effort in the five-game win over Bethany University, we should list the other notables who turned in a great performance as well. Casey Miller, JoAnne Mauries, Tiffany Jacobson, and Amanda Richards all turned in season highs in the match.
