Bryan Hewitt is an interdisciplinary artist and freelance photographer currently living and working in San Anselmo and San Francisco, California. He has shown both nationally and internationally, most recently as part of A Sensory Feast at SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco, CA and 2010 01SJ Biennial  in San Jose CA.

Hewitt frequently works on collaborative projects that bridge the gap between curatorial and artistic practices, such as being involved in the organization and mounting of The Garage Biennale in San Francisco, CA throughout its duration (2005-2008). He has worked on several community-based collaborative pieces with his wife, Vita Hewitt, such as The Mask Project at the Canal Alliance in San Rafael, CA.

He is currently represented by Chandra Cerrito, Art Advisor. His work is included in the permanent collections of Yatoo, The Korean Nature Arts Association, and SF Recycling & Disposal. 

Hewitt attended Southern Oregon University where he earned a B.A. in Art with a minor in Spanish Literature in 2000. He received an M.F.A. in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2004. Since that time he has held positions as an instructor at the graduate and/or undergraduate level at the Memphis College of Art, the Art Institute of California-San Francisco, the UC Berkeley Extension Program,  the Academy of Art University and the San Francisco Art Institute. He is currently working as a freelance photographer, color management consultant and photography instructor.

Classes
The first week of Digital Photography, is as described below. If the first week is taken for credit the fee is $600, otherwise the audit fee of $300 applies.

The second week of Digital Photography is a workshop, not available for credit, with a fee of $300. The second week is designed to help the participant develop and hone his/her photographic skills in  editing and presentation. It will also include instruction and practice in HDR and panorama techniques.

Both weeks include a mix of lectures, critique discussions and on-location shooting field trips

Rooms
All rooms now have private baths and sleep a maximum of four. The dorm rooms have a queen bed and two single beds in the form of a bunk. The family cabins have a queen bed and two singles in a sleeping loft. The kitchenette rooms come fully equipped with range, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishes and utensils.

Food Service
Two meal plans are provided for your convenience. You may choose the one which works best for you.

If you choose the flat-rate plan, it is a fixed dollar amount for the full time you are here. For the two-week session there will be 36 meals served. The one-week session will consist of 15 meals. Breakfast and dinner will be sit down meals served in the dining room. For lunch you will prepare your own sack lunch from the materials provided.

If you choose the occasional meal plan, the cost is $9.50/meal for only those meals you choose to take. Out of courtesy to the chef and to make sure that he has enough food, please give him eight hours advance notice.

All meals will have the current California State Sales Tax added to the price charged for the meals. Regular PUC students are not subject to the sales tax charge.

Class Description

Digital Photography designed as a two-week intensive class that focuses on the practice of landscape photography through daily on-location shoots and critiques. Students can take either the first week, the second week, or both. No previous photography experience is necessary to enroll, but the course is designed to allow students of all skill levels the opportunity to improve their effectiveness at communicating through photography. We will be examining historical and contemporary landscape photographer's work as well as shooting.

  • The first goal of this class is to help the students learn how to effectively communicate through the medium of photography.
  • The second goal of this class is to help students gain the necessary technical skills to implement their ideas. This will focus primarily on camera technique.
  • The third goal is to help students sequence and select images for presentation.
  • The fourth goal is to help students learn to select the most appropriate presentation strategy for their content.

Tuition/Audit Rates

The class may be taken for credit or audit. The fee for 2 hours of college credit is $600 (for one week). The audit/workshop fee is $300 per week. For individuals wanting to come in on a daily basis, the fee is $100 per day.

Beginning Times for All Classes

  • The second week of the Digital Photography Session begins with check-in after 3 p.m. and dinner on July 17 and ends with check-out before 11 a.m. and lunch on July 20.

Supplies and Equipment for Class

  • Digital camera (point and shoot camera, a full digital SLR, or anything in-between)
  • Laptop computer with enough "horse power" to run Photoshop CS5
  • We will be running trial copies of Photoshop CS5 and Bridge CS5. A Mac or a PC, either one will work just fine.
  • Wireless Internet is available
