Connect to the internet through Clean Access

PUC's network is protected by Clean Access, a security system that helps minimize the number of viruses and security problems. Before being able to access the internet, users must log into the Clean Access server. There are two different scenarios for this:

  • Computers with Microsoft Windows are required to install and log into software called "Clean Access Agent" which checks to see that the computers have all the critical Windows updates installed and a current anti-virus program with current virus definition updates. The directions below detail how to install and use Clean Access Agent.
  • Macintosh and Linux users only have to log into the Clean Access website before they can use the internet.
  • In both cases the login is your PUC email username and password. (Guests may obtain a temporary user name and password by visiting ITSS underneath Nelson Memorial Library.)

Please note: Throughout this process you will be prompted to receive "untrusted" certificates from Clean Access, and/or PUC. If you see either one of these names on a certificate, be sure to click YES. If you have a firewall enabled, please turn it off or allow Clean Access to run through it. PUC's internet access is protected by its own firewall.

  1. Connect your computer to the network with an Ethernet cable in your dorm room or via wireless in one of the wireless locations.
    • Dormitory users will need to either have or purchase an Ethernet cable. It looks like a phone cable but it is slightly bigger. NOTE: a phone cord will not work for this!!! If you need an Ethernet cable you can purchase a 50 foot cable from ITSS for $15. You will plug one end of the cable into your computer and the other end into the Ethernet port in your room. The Ethernet port looks like a phone jack, but bigger, and is generally located in one of the corners of the room near the ceiling.
    • Wireless users can connect to the network by going to one of the wireless locations (ie., dorm lobbies, cafeteria, library, some classrooms, etc). Have your computer's wireless network software search for wireless networks. It should find the network called "PUC Wireless Network". Click to connect. There is no password or encryption key needed for this step.
  2. Once connected to the network, open Internet Explorer or your favorite browser.
    • For Windows PC users you will be redirected to a page called, "Clean Access Download Page." In order to proceed, you will need to install the Clean Access Agent shown in step 3 below.
    • Mac and Linux users will be redirected to a web page with a place to login with your PUC email username and password. (Guests; you will use the guest username and password provided by ITSS.) Once logged in you will have full access to the internet and do not have to do anything else.
  3. Windows users, click the link to install Clean Access Agent. When prompted click "Open."
  4. You will see a dialog box titled "Clean Access Setup", click "Next."
  5. Click "Next" again.
  6. Click "Install."
  7. Check the Box which says "Launch Clean Access Agent," then Click "Finish."
  8. A green square icon will appear on the task bar in the bottom right corner of your screen, right click on it, then click "Login."
  9. Enter your username and password which are your PUC email username and password. If you don't know what your e-mail username and password are, please contact ITSS at ext. 7000. (Guests; enter the username and password provided by ITSS. Please note: you will also have to change the "authentication provider" to CLEAN ACCESS in order to login.)
  10. If your computer is up to date, Clean Access will tell you that you have successfully logged in to the network. Click "OK" and you can start surfing the Internet.
  11. If your computer is not updated correctly Clean Access will tell you that you have temporary access and tell you what the problems are (ie., missing windows critical updates or old virus definitions). There are links which you can click to update these components on your computer. Once everything is updated you may have to reboot the computer. Then when you log into Clean Access again you will have full access to the internet and the PUC network.
