Grainger Hall

Grainger Hall, one of PUC’s three men’s residence halls, has gone by a number of names over the years. The building was originally the Angwin Hotel, and after PUC bought the property and opened in Angwin in 1909, the structure was renamed Adelphian Hall and later North Hall. Rebuilt in 1923 and named Grainger Hall in 1930, this men’s residence hall is a vast improvement over the accommodations that early male students experienced. Since the Angwin Hotel was the nicest building around, it was used as a ladies residence hall until 1912. Before the men of PUC took over Grainger, they slept in tents, barn lofts, and the dark, damp cellar of the former dance hall.

Grainger Hall still boasts some of the architectural features from those early days, but the building has been updated to accommodate men of the twenty-first century. Several of Grainger’s 92 rooms are remodeled every summer, making way for the 150 students that the hall houses during the school year. The dorm has community showers and bathrooms, and is equipped with a laundry room and full kitchen, as well as vending machines. It also has a comfortable parlor with television and fireplace. To make studying easier, the rooms are each linked so that students can have access to the library, their professors, and the Internet. Grainger is conveniently located on the campus, with quick access to the Dining Commons.

Meet Dean Halversen

Dean Jonny Halversen is PUC’s resident gentle giant. However, "Dean Halvy" might also be PUC’s resident nerd; one visit to his office may be all the proof you need. Sci-Fi posters and figurines fill every vacant space in one of the most unique offices you will ever see on campus.

An alumnus of PUC, Halversen graduated with a B.S. in Graphic Design. Before assuming the responsibilities of dean a mere four years ago, he worked as an art director at an ad agency in Spokane, Washington and then with the PR and Marketing departments at Walla Walla University.

As for personal interests, Halversen enthusiastically cites “Art and design, sports and a little bit of Star Wars!” It is not uncommon to see Halversen at the gym participating in intramural sports with the students. He is also a regular contributor on PUC RecRadio, the podcast devoted to intramural sports at PUC.

When asked what he enjoys most about the work of a dean, he says, “The challenge of toeing the line between parent, counselor, pastor, probation officer, and friend.” So the next time you need one of the above, call your friendly PUC giant.

Halversen's wife Laurie works at the PUC counseling center. They have three kids, Jonny, Miranda and Gage.
