What I See

On March 7, Barry Black stood before a full audience of students, staff, community members, and parents. Black came to Pacific Union College to speak for the biennial Heubach Lecture, provided by the Paul C. Heubach endowment. Black left an impression on PUC with his passion and message.

Black was the guest speaker for PUC Church's two services on Sabbath morning. The theme of first service's sermon was "Gather the Fragments," in which Black discussed the importance of using whatever fragments of blessings people had in their lives. He stressed that God can use people in ways never imagined. Second service had a different feel to it - "Comfort in Tough Times." Black emphasized the rewards awaiting those who patiently wait for the Lord to dispel the shadows in their lives. For Black, one must have complete faith in God that He will act on behalf of His children.

At five that afternoon, Black once again stood before an audience in the PUC Church to deliver the topic of "Defending the Faith." Black gave six reasons someone can defend their faith: being ready to do good, taking the less familiar path in life, intelligence, winsomeness, perseverance, and setting an example.

After the lecture, Black sat for a book signing of his autobiography From the Hood to the Hill. All 250 copies present were sold, and long lines waited to acquire Black's autograph. He answered questions ranging from his life to his career to his book.

Barry Black serves as the 62nd chaplain of the United States Senate. Black served in the US Navy for 27 years before entering the Senate in 2003. He holds a Master of Arts in divinity, counseling, and management, and holds a doctorate degree in ministry and a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology.

The Heubach Lectureship series began in 1998 and seeks to examine central Christian truths in light of God's character by using language that is easily accessible.
