Rick Harter - Clyde R. and Lela Baldwin Scholarship
, August 20, 2008
Rick Harter, a senior aviation major, is the recipient of the Clyde R. and Lela Baldwin scholarship. “Every little bit helps and this was quite a bit,” he says of the scholarship, which was established by Lois Berry in January of 1992. “If I’m ever able, I’d love to give back.”
Rick did not grow up as the son of missionaries, nor has he been oversees as a student missionary, but he did go on a mission trip in the United States when he was younger and now feels called to missions. “I want to go to the Solomon Islands or Guyana…wherever the Lord calls. There is nowhere I wouldn’t want to go.” To become a missionary pilot Rick will need a lot of flight time, so his tentative a plan after graduation is to clock the needed hours in either flight instructing or small business chartering.
Rick came to PUC because it was close to his home in Tahoe, friends, and the financial doors that were opened. He also credits his presence at PUC to a few other reasons, such as some of his friends from Rio Lindo Adventist Academy coming and the financial doors that opened, making it easier for him to attend PUC. Rick says PUC offers him friends, a beautiful campus on which to study, and mentors in his professors. “I do look up to them. They are my instructors and they help me learn to be a better pilot.” Though the aviation program is expensive, Rick says, he loves flying. “You can go anywhere and do anything. It’s beautiful.”
