Joshua Barney has divulged a secret, “Greek,” he says, “really is a fun class.” He is currently a student in the class along with fellow theology majors, and will also have to take Hebrew. “Greek is suppose to be a sophomore class but it is mainly juniors, and Hebrew is suppose to be a junior class and it is mostly seniors. But they aren’t that hard,” Barney says.

Barney, a junior theology major, is the recipient of a Ministerial Training Scholarship. This year 12 students received a scholarship from the Ministerial Training endowed fund – that is a total of $6,300 given to theology majors preparing for ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist church. “Thanks!” Barney says to those investing in his future. “It’s a good work they are supporting …. Hopefully I will live up to that expectation.”

Barney's decision to come to PUC was based on three issues 1) it was close to home (Hayward, CA), 2) his parents attended PUC, and 3) the religion department faculty. As it turns out, the religion department lived up to his expectations as Barney considers the all religion faculty to be he’s mentors along with Pastor Surridge, pastor at the Elmshaven Church which is Barney’s extern Church. The Extern program is a required course for those juniors and senior theology majors who are accepted into the ministerial training program and includes field work in an assigned church and a weekly seminar. As part of his extern program Barney attends the Elmshaven church, preaches once or twice a quarter and teaches a youth class. Barney says of his decision to pursue pastoral service, “It’s the one area I feel called to and can help people in a lasting way.”

Unlike the majority of college juniors, Barney has both short term and long term plans. First his focus is his extern program - to continue to enjoy working with the Elmshaven church. After graduation he wants get a “call” from a conference and pastor a church for a few years. He wants to get married and continue on in his education at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University.
