Cody Carter, junior biology major, is a true student of the sciences and this year’s recipient of the Edmund C. Jaeger Award. Receiving the award has inspired Cody. “It made me feel good to know that I was being recognized for working hard, and it inspired me to work harder, to be the best professional I can be in order to help many people,” says Cody. “It’s greatly appreciated.”

The Edmund C. Jaeger endowed scholarship is awarded annually to male junior or senior students who have a particular interest in natural history.

Cody discovered his love for science while attending Loma Linda Academy. “I had a good biology teacher there, and they got me into it. I’ve always enjoyed how processes work and how biological processes work in the body,” says Cody. He also accredits his love for science to his family; his dad and his brother are orthodontists, and his mother is a dental hygienist.

“I’d heard that PUC had the best science program of the Adventist colleges,” says Cody, and now as a biology student, he says he agrees. “There are a lot of great teachers here, and the small class sizes have allowed me to get to know them.” Dr. Hemmerlin and Dr. Vance are the teachers that most influence him. “I work for them now, as a teaching assistant in both organic chemistry lab and in physiology lab.” Cody also taught biology lab and tutored physiology students through his sophomore year. “I really like teaching, and I met a lot of my friends that way.”

As a junior, Cody is still deciding what he is going to do with his major. Right now he is deciding if he should stick to the original plan of going into the dental field or head more towards the medical field. Though he also admits he is considering getting his Ph.D. in biology and teaching.

When Cody is not studying or teaching, he takes advantage of the cycling opportunities PUC offers, both road and mountain, and says of the trails, “It’s a blast up here.”
