Frequently Asked Questions

General

What are some perks of the PacificQuest programs?

Students will work side-by-side with other academically motivated students and PUC college faculty. Besides the obvious enrichment that students will get from participating, students who successfully complete the program will earn 1-credit of (transferable) college credit.

What is the program fee, what does it cover, how do I pay, and when is the full payment due?

There is a $600 program fee.  This covers all lodging, meals, and programming from Sunday evening through Friday at noon.  Payment can be made by credit card or check.  The program fee must be received in full at least one week before the program begins.  Please note that there is an additional $30 fee for pick up from or drop off at SMF airport. There is a $60 fee for pick up from and drop off to SMF airport.  (PacificQuest does not offer pick up or drop off service for other airports)

Where and what will my student eat?

Meals are provided for the entire week by the PUC Dining Commons (operated by Bon Appetit). Dinner is provided on Sunday for students and their families. Students will be provided with three meals Monday-Thursday and breakfast on Friday. Dietary restrictions or allergies should be listed on the online participant questionnaire, and we will do our best to accommodate these requests.

Does my student need additional money during the week?

No additional cash is needed.

When and where do we drop off our student?

Driving directions to the Pacific Union College campus are found on our getting to PUC page.

Students should be dropped off on the PUC campus at Winning Hall on Sunday afternoon, the day that the program begins.  Signs will be posted directing you to this location but please also see the PUC campus map

We invite parents and family members to stay for dinner that is typically served at 5:30 pm.  This is an opportunity for you to meet the PacificQuest program faculty and staff and to hear about the week ahead.  We ask that all family members leave campus following dinner.  Official programming begins at 7 pm.

Those parents and/or other family who require accommodations the same Sunday night can view our list of lodging options

When and where do we pick up our student?

The program ends on Friday by noon. There is a program that begins with worship at 9am in Davidian Hall room 205. Signs will be posted directing you to this location but please also see the PUC campus map.   Students present what they learned for the week and awards are given to all students. Parents and family are encouraged to attend this event. The program typically ends by noon. Afterwards students are "released" back to their parent or guardian.

How do we arrange transportation if my student will travel by air?

Pick up and drop off students flying into and out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) can be arranged but carries an additional fee.  If your student uses air travel, be sure to indicate this on the online participant questionnaire and provide a copy of the travel itinerary.  The drive time between the airport and PUC campus is approximately two hours.  Please add $30 to your payment for pick up or drop off.  Please add $60 to your payment for pick up and drop off.   (PacificQuest does not offer pick up or drop off service for other airports)

  • Students traveling by air must arrive at SMF on Sunday by 12:00 pm.  Pick up will occur between 12-1 pm and students will need to wait at the airport baggage claim area until then.  Students cannot be picked up later than 1 pm.
  • Students traveling by air must depart SMF on Friday after 3:00 pm.  Students will be dropped off in time to make a 3:00 pm or later flight.  Students will be supervised until they have passed through the Security Gate.  At that point, our staff is no longer responsible for the students.

Where does my student stay? Where do they sleep?

Each student is assigned to a PUC Residence Hall and shares the room with a roommate.  There is a private restroom with shower that is shared between two adjoining dorm rooms.  Rooms have two twin beds that require bedding. Be sure that your student brings his or her own bedding, pillow, and towels.

In their residence hall, all students stay within a few doors of each other. Counselors stay in the residence hall and on the same floor as the students. The Counselors are responsible for ensuring that students are in their rooms in the evening and that they are on time to the morning Worship. Outer residence hall doors are secured at night and students may not exit.

If your student has a roommate request, be sure to indicate this on the online participant questionnaire.

Who supervises my student during the week?

Students are under constant supervision by PacificQuest faculty and staff. The daily schedule begins at 7:30 am and students must be in their residence hall by 10 pm. During organized classes and programs students are supervised by the faculty, Camp Director, Counselor and/or other PacificQuest staff members. Students are together as a group for most of the day and move from activity-to-activity as such. Outside of classes students are under the constant supervision of their Counselors.

Can and/or should my student bring their camera, cell phone, laptop computer, gaming and/or other electronic devices?

Students should bring a camera. Though students may bring a cell phone or smartphone, we require that they leave these devices “off” during all classes and programming. We request that students leave gaming and other electronic devices at home. Students will be busy throughout the day, and we emphasize face-to-face interactions and hands-on learning.

What type of clothing and shoes should my student pack?

The weather in Angwin (at PUC) during the summer is changeable. Mornings can be cool and foggy and afternoons very hot! Students should bring clothes that they can layer – long and short pants and shirts. Students will have at least one hour of recreational activity each day and so need to bring comfortable clothes and appropriate gym shoes for these activities. There may be an opportunity for swimming and so bring a swimsuit and beach towel. Please ensure that bathing attire is appropriate and conservatively cut.

Students will also be outside much of the time in the tide pools, mud flats, at the beach, etc. Students should bring comfortable but durable clothes and shoes. They should bring clothes and shoes that can get very dirty. Flip-flops and sandals cannot be worn during most of the activities so be sure to bring good shoes.

PQSeek

What is the PQSeek Talent Show, and must my student participate?

PQSeek students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Talent Show. The student can perform a skit or read poetry, play a musical instrument, or share other talents with a small audience. There is a piano available for those who need it. Students are welcome to bring their own instrument or can possibly borrow one from the PUC Music Department.

PQSoar

Is there any extra cost or equipment required?

No. The costs for this program are included in registration. If you wish to log any experience and have a logbook, it is suggested that you bring it. We can also provide endorsements on paper which can be transcribed or inserted later.

How does the flying work?

Our staff will rotate with you through an approved simulation device (Advanced Aviation Training Device) which replicates an aircraft quite realistically. Every participant will have an opportunity to experience what it is like to operate the flight controls through a range of exercises and maneuvers. Additionally, we plan to operate a series of flights in an aircraft where two or three participants will fly with one of our senior flight instructors.

What conditions apply to logging flight or “simulator" time?

Time spent in the simulator or aircraft, manipulating the controls while under the supervision of an instructor may be logged and credited toward any future flight experience totals. Future certificates or ratings issued in the United States under the FAA, however, will require participants to first present an original birth certificate or passport proving USA citizenship. Citizens of other countries may only begin logging flight training for powered aircraft (airplanes) after initiating a background check and screening process.

What If I get motion sickness or am nervous about something?

It is quite normal for aspiring pilots to experience nervousness or motion sickness (or both)! There is no need to feel embarrassed as this is somewhat common. The best approach is to communicate your concerns to a staff member, and we will provide techniques, suggestions and in some cases a slightly modified experience so that comfort and maximum benefit can be attained.

PQTune

Who are the clinicians for PQTune?

PUC strings faculty. Rachelle Berthelsen Davis is the artistic director and primary upper strings clinician. Other clinicians will include Ronnie Zanella and Kyle Stachnik.

Will there be private lessons as part of the program?

No.

What does my child need to bring in addition to their instrument?

An extra set of strings, rosin, a mute, and a metronome (or phone with a metronome app). We will provide music stands and any music they will use.

Where will my student store their instrument?

Each student will have a music department instrument locker checked out to them for the duration of the program.

My student plays bass. Do you have an instrument they can use?

We have several standard sized basses available for students to use during the program.  We do not have smaller sized basses available.  If your student would like to use a PUC bass, please email the Music Department directly at music@puc.edu.
