During this year's Alumni Weekend, current and former students, faculty, friends and family of Tom Turner viewed his retrospective show at a packed Rasmussen Art Gallery. The show included work from early in his career to his most recent works from 2012. The exhibition included watercolor, acrylic and oil painting, collage and photography. His photography showed the diversity of his talents which included landscape, portrait, nature, abstract and documentary. To mark the occasion, a short presentation was given by department chair, Milbert Mariano. Tom was presented a book which included tributes and photographs from dozens of former students, colleagues, family and friends. Many also contributed to his biggest surprise, which brought tears to his eyes, a new iPad. "Tom is one of the most prolific educators of the arts in Adventist education…we have all seen Christ in him." said Mariano. Tom will continue as a half-time professor starting Fall 2012. This will allow him to pursue other interests and still allow him to teach, which is what he loves most.

PUC Unveils Bachelor of Fine Arts
 |
Pacific Union College is unveiling two new academic programs available for students in the 2012-2013 school year. |
by Giovanni Hashimoto
Pacific Union College is unveiling two new academic programs available for students in the 2012-2013 school year. In the fall, the department of visual arts will begin offering aspiring artists a new bachelor of fine arts while the department of mathematics is spearheading a new interdisciplinary biomathematics major for students interested in both mathematics and biology.
PUC's new bachelor of fine arts (BFA) program offers a professional degree with a unique combination of graphic design, fine art, photography, and film and television production in a comprehensive BFA degree.
"We're all really excited about the program," says Milbert Mariano, chair of the department of visual arts. "It's a more professional degree that prepares students to either go on to graduate school or be a professional in those areas due to the intensity of the program."
The BFA curriculum will be more focused on core visual arts classes than those of the BA and BS programs offered by the department. To facilitate the larger focus on departmental classes, students in the program will have a reduced general education requirement.
BFA-track students will focus about 20 percent of their classes on art history or art criticism to gain a greater depth of knowledge of the visual arts. In addition, students in the program will have their own studio spaces during their third and fourth year to work independently while developing their senior thesis projects and portfolios.
The new degree has already attracted interest from many students. "There has been huge interest in the program," says Mariano. "A lot of students want to apply, and I would say more than half of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in the department want to transfer over to the new BFA."
The other new program at PUC, the degree in biomathematics, is an attractive option for students interested in combining the study of biology and mathematics in preparation for graduate programs in those fields.
"By introducing this new bachelor of science in biomathematics, we are looking to help students interested in pursuing a mathematics degree who also want to pursue pre-professional programs requiring work in biology," said Lloyd Best, math department chair and advisor for students in the new program.
Best notes that the new major is also valuable to students interested in pursuing graduate study in public health emphasizing biostatistics, mathematical biology, biometrics and other research-intensive programs, as well as biomathematics. PUC is one of only two colleges or universities affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church to offer a major in biomathematics.
Students studying biomathematics will master mathematical problem-solving methods and understand the concepts and constructs of general chemistry and biology, allowing them to apply mathematical methods to model various biological phenomena. They will also learn to function effectively in a mathematical modeling team and communicate modeling methods and results in both written and oral form while mastering technologies used in mathematics.
Four students have already enrolled in the program. "I heard about the biomathematics program here... it seemed like a good combination of both my majors put together," explains Tessa Lamberton, a transfer biomathematics student who was pursuing a biology and mathematics double major at her previous school. "This major gives me an opportunity to still do a degree in four years and have that option for grad school, whether in biomath or biology or medical school. It opens more doors for me."

GoJane.com Creative Director to PUC Students: Be Thirsty for Opportunities

by Larry Peña
At a Thursday morning presentation at PUC's visual arts department, PUC alum Rayme Inae, '01, encouraged students to always be on the lookout for new opportunities. Inae is the creative director for—and helped start—GoJane.com, a popular online retailer of fashion-forward apparel for young women.
"People want decisions made for them," he told the students. "Grab the steering wheel of your own life!"
A big man with a big smile, Inae shared his advice and his success story in a lively and frank presentation that energized the room. He described his experience at PUC as an active—if not always stellar—student and encouraged the visual arts majors to view their course work as a chance to build a meaningful portfolio that would serve them in the job market.
After graduation, Inae said he couldn't find work as a graphic designer—his area of study. But his friendly and enthusiastic personality landed him a job in advertising sales. In one year he advanced rapidly in the company and saved up a sizeable cushion from commissions on large clients like the Golden State Warriors. But after an ethical disagreement with the company, he quit—and realized that he didn't know what he wanted to do next.
Living in Southern California, Inae ran into two friends who were trying to get a small dotcom company off the ground. Taking stock of their situation—just a couple of guys in a house trying to sell a single rack of clothing online—Inae realized that he could help them build up their operation, but under one condition. "I told them, 'I want to see growth," he said.
He ended up being an integral part of that growth. Once he had designed a new, more appealing website, people started paying attention. After a slew of orders came through in one day, Inae and his partners discovered that their customers had heard of them through YM, a popular teen magazine. That first appearance started a snowball effect: GoJane.com began showing up in editorials in every young women's publication in the country, and their business took off.
Inae was open about the fact that his story hasn't always had an upward trajectory. As GoJane.com grew, he and his partners decided to expand into a brick-and-mortar operation with physical stores in Southern California malls. That, in turn, led them to see a gap in the market for Mexican food in mall food courts, and they started a small chain of burrito restaurants. Despite initial success, neither of those operations panned out in the long run. But Inae seemed unfazed by the apparent failures. "You take it all in stride," he says. "Life rewards risk-takers."
He admitted that in the wake of the company's financial success, he became too focused on purely material goals—the big house, the expensive car. But once the thrill of those achievements wore off, he realized that those things weren't satisfying. "It was just a matter of maturing and realizing that there are things out there that are bigger than you," he says. "Right now I take pride in investing in people."
That includes investing in his employees. It also includes supporting students, by assisting them with tuition and sponsoring student mission trips. "I think a year abroad—you grow up a lot and find out who you are," he says. He himself spent a year as a missionary in Japan during his time at PUC. "It's a great growing experience, and I think it's really cool."
What keeps Inae excited about his work—as well as his more philanthropic investments—he says, is not a passion for selling women's clothing. It's not even the financial rewards of being part of a successful company. "It's about identifying opportunity. If you're so focused on one thing, you might miss other opportunities that are opening for you," he said. "I just have a passion for growth."

"Keep going!" My mind keeps on telling me this day in and day out when things get tough or I start to feel overwhelmed up here at PUC. |
by Cameron Crabtree - Junior, Film/Fine Arts
"Keep going!" My mind keeps on telling me this day in and day out when things get tough or I start to feel overwhelmed up here at PUC. I didn't think it would take so much out of me working twenty-plus hours a week with a full course schedule. But it's what I like to do. I've found I need to keep busy and find something to challenge myself in life.
Being a film/fine art major, people would suspect that I have the easiest studies in the world. I must admit it's pretty enjoyable—but still as intensive as some of the other majors. We just use a different side of our brain for our learning. And in this field, finding a job that pays the bills is difficult. At least that's what my parents keep telling me. But PUC has a wonderful art program and offers me a great variety of ways to pursue my career choice, as well as keeping me busy.
Amongst all the stresses of this year, I still find much-needed time to spend with my friends. That's what keeps me going. I have met some amazing friends up here and they've given me the motivation to keep fighting for my dream.
My life overall: challenging but still fulfilling.
