The changing demand for nurses means a variety of job openings in many places, with opportunities for advancement. The individual nurse has freedom to work in the home, doctors' offices, schools, the military, mission fields, publishing houses, camps, airlines, professional organizations and many other places. Nurses can be involved in caring for the sick, rehabilitating the handicapped, promoting health, preventing disease, teaching health classes, teaching in a school of nursing and a host of other activities.
In the hospital, an R.N. has the opportunity to practice in trauma/emergency, critical care, outpatient and inpatient surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, cardiology, rehabilitation, and psychiatry. In the community, an R.N. can practice in physicians' offices, clinics, schools, occupational and public health systems, or home health. More than ever, today's graduate Registered Nurses have a wide array of career choices and are on the front lines of the dynamic healthcare environment.
Nurses are in great demand. Jobs are available in rural settings or metropolitan areas on a full- or part-time basis with flexible hours and days. Options for nurses in acute care and community settings are rapidly increasing.
Starting wage rates vary from $28 to $40 per hour for a staff nurse in California. Registered Nurse salaries in the United States range from $42,000 to $104,000 annually. Salary is dependent on geographic location, professional experience, area of nursing specialty and academic preparation.
