Degrees & Programs

Major in Music, Performance Emphasis—B.Mus.

Performance music majors usually plan to continue their education on the graduate level with the goal of eventually teaching their particular performance area (voice or instrument) in college. Other, often part-time job opportunities for this degree include private studio teaching, studio musicians, symphony players, and church musicians.

Major in Music, Education Emphasis—B.Mus.

The music-education program is for students who wish to teach music in a school situation. Graduates of the program are granted both California State Preliminary and SDA Basic credentials qualifying them to instruct in all phases of music from preschool through grade twelve. Completion of the degree requires one quarter beyond the regular four-year program in order to complete student teaching.

Major in Music—B.S.

This degree is preparation for further study in a variety of disciplines, including medicine or dentistry, or graduate studies in music or other fields. Graduates typically continue education toward specialized professional careers, or teach in a private music studio.

Major in Music, with Pre-med/Pre-dent Requirements—B.S.

This program is for students who want to obtain a medical or dental surgery degree while pursuing a strong interest in music, or for the student who cannot decide between music and medical/dental surgery at the beginning of college and wishes to keep both options open.

Major in Music—A.S.

Students in the A.S. program are more involved in music-making than the average college graduate. Graduates might be employed as church musicians, private studio teachers, music store employees, or orchestral musicians.
