The English major offers several programs. The English-Education program leads to a credential for teaching junior and senior high school English. By adding an English-as-a-Second-Language emphasis or TESOL certificate, students gain extra skills in working with second-language learners either at home or abroad. The British and American literature focus is taken by students wishing to go on to graduate school in English. Students who are interested in pursuing careers in writing take the writing emphasis in which they may focus on creative writing or journalism classes; and for those interested in the arts, both an emphasis and a minor are available in drama. Many students take the major because they love reading and writing, and the major works well combined with pre-professional classes that allow them to go on to law, medicine, dentistry, or business.
All students take a core program which is strong in literature, language, and literary theory. In addition, they may choose one or more emphases:
The department also offers minors in literature, writing, and drama.
