JULY 05, 2006 –The Board of Trustees of Pacific Union College has unanimously approved an agreement with Triad Communities (Triad) for developing a portion of the college’s property in Angwin, California.
The agreement, however, does not include specifics on exactly how the land will be developed. The details of the development plan will be determined, in part, during a six-month refinement period. During this time, Triad will meet with local residents and the college’s faculty and staff to gather input on how to best build the community. Already, Triad has begun initial meetings with Angwin community leaders.
One of the ideas in discussion is a plan to create a sustainable community in Angwin. Sustainable development is an emerging discipline that addresses community creation and operations in a more resource-conscious and earth-friendly manner.
The goal of the land development, and the revenue it will generate, is to grow the college endowment, allowing PUC to increase scholarships for students and create resources for faculty retention and recruitment. As with many colleges, PUC is facing the effects of the soaring cost of higher education. Tuition dollars alone are no longer sufficient to adequately provide student scholarships, campus repairs, and necessary employee salary increases in a high expense area.
This decision is critical to guaranteeing the college’s future as a vibrant learning community said PUC president Richard Osborn. “Our hope is that PUC will continue to provide an excellent Christ-centered education to as many young people as possible.”
