ACADEMIC
My daughter earned exceptional grades
in high school. Why is she struggling now in college?
College is very different than high school! Even students
who have done exceptionally well in high school will find college
work challenging. Students spend less time in class than they did
in high school and more time in preparation. College professors demand
much more than high school teachers, and the course material is covered
at a faster pace. Good note-taking and study habits are the essential
skills that make adjusting to classes easier.
What are the biggest adjustments during the
first year?
Learning to discipline oneself and manage time are critical
adjustments that must be made. College classes may meet only every
other day, or once a week, but the workload does not diminish. “Free”
time may create a false sense of security, but after midterm exams
it may become clear that more time should have been spent studying.
It is suggested that the student spend two hours of studying for every
one hour in class. However, study time does need to be balanced with
study breaks. Another adjustment students may have to make is to seek
help if academic difficulty is encountered.
Your job is to reassure your student that success in college is an
attainable goal for those who apply themselves.
Where can students go for assistance with
their classes?
The Teaching and Learning
Center is dedicated to helping
PUC students develop their abilities for a successful college experience.
The center is located just north of the Dining Commons on the small
road leading to the science complex.
The TLC is open for your personal
tutoring needs, advising for those students with undeclared majors,
and additional requests for academic support. Computer assisted
learning resources are also available for math, reading, and a
variety of other subjects. Please phone the TLC at (707) 965-7688
or e-mail at TLC@puc.edu.
My son or daughter is not doing well in a
class and doesn't know what to do.
First of all, it is essential that you meet in person and privately
with your professor immediately. Arrange for a meeting in the professor's
office. At this time, you can review what is giving you difficulty.
Discuss your note taking and test preparation methods. Inquire about
tutoring possibilities. Determine if it is possible for you to succeed
in the class or if you should consider dropping the class. If you
plan to stay in the class, be sure that you attend all of the class
sessions. If you decide to drop the class, be aware of the published
deadline for receiving a grade of "W". To drop a class,
complete the proper paperwork in the Record's office. It is important
to be aware of the last date to drop a class and still receive a "W".
Why do parents not receive a copy of mid-term
and final grades?
In maintaining student records, the College complies with
the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, which
prohibits the College from releasing any information (including grades)
about a student without the student's written permission. The Your
Right to Privacy form [PDF] is available for your student
to sign granting you access to their grades. The law
provides, however, that the College may disclose certain information
without requiring the student’s consent.
What services are available for career planning?
PUC’s Career
and Counseling Center invites students to discuss career options,
self-assessment, values, skills, interests, goals and job-seeking
strategies with a career counselor. See Career
Exploration for more information.
How can parents assist their student in the
career development process?
Encourage your son or daughter to visit the Career
and Counseling Center as early as freshman year to learn about
the many services and programs we offer. We want to empower students
with the skills, experience, and knowledge needed to make informed
decisions about their career planning. This is best accomplished
with
an early start! We also encourage you to visit the rest of our parent
web site to learn about additional ways you may assist your
student.
Does PUC offer a program for studying abroad?
PUC is a member of Adventist
Colleges Abroad (ACA), a consortium of colleges and universities
operated by the Board of Higher Education of the North American Division
of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This consortium affords opportunity
to qualified students for international study while completing the
requirements of their programs at their home campus. The program
allows
students to immerse themselves in the culture and life of the host
country and become conversant in the language; to mature socially,
spiritually, and intellectually; and to develop sensitivity to cultural
differences and a sense of responsibility for and mission to other
peoples of the world. Campuses are in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Greece,
France, Italy, Russia, or Spain.
What does PUC offer for students with learning
disabilities?
PUC’s Teaching
and Learning Center offers
students with diagnosed learning disabilities access to accommodations
and support that will improve
their college experience. Students with learning disabilities may
be seen by counselors who help determine the appropriate resources
needed. See Learning
and Psychological Disability Services for
more information.
STUDENT LIFE
Is the meal plan required if my
son or daughter lives on campus?
The
Dining Commons is operated on the cafeteria plan. Each student
in the residence hall taking a minimum of 6 units is charged a non-refundable
minimum board of $775 / quarter. Note this is not a maximum amount.
Any amount that is spent over the minimum board for the quarter
is
billed to a student’s account at the end of the quarter. Students
are encouraged to spend approximately $70 / week in order to maintain
a steady employment of their minimum board.
What should she/he bring for the
residence hall room?
The residence halls will be open for you to move in beginning
Thursday, September 20. Hopefully, new students will have already
filled
out a Residence Hall Information Card and sent in the $150 room reservation
fee to Enrollment Services.
When planning what to bring from home, keep in mind the
following items: mattress cover, desk lamp, linens for a bed, wastebasket,
telephone, earphones, iron, airtight food storage containers, room
décor to reflect a Christian atmosphere, and cleaning supplies.
Optional items to bring: coffee maker, rice cooker, blender, microwave,
hot pot with enclosed heating elements, micro refrigerator, and computer. See The
Ultimate To Bring List [PDF].
If you have any questions, contact the women’s residence hall
at (707) 965-6313 or the men’s residence hall at (707) 965-6487.
How long are the beds in the residence
halls?
The beds in the residence halls are standard size twin
beds.
Can students stay in the residence
halls over quarter breaks?
Winning Hall (for women) and Newton Hall (for men) are
the only residence halls open during quarter breaks. Only those students
who must stay on campus for work or dean-approved reasons will be
allowed to stay.
What if my son or daughter experiences roommate
problems?
The enjoyment of life in the residence hall will depend
on the responsibility roommates take and the thoughtful consideration
demonstrated for each other. At times, conflict may arise. If issues
cannot be resolved between roommates, the residence hall staff is
available to assist in conflict resolution.
How can my son or daughter get
involved in campus activities?
PUC has Clubs
and Organizations, the Student
Association, Intramurals, and Campus
Ministries service opportunities to participate in. These are
excellent ways to meet people while getting involved in something
significant.
What type of services does Health Services
provide?
Click Health
Services for additional information.
What should my son or daughter
do if they get sick?
We recommend being assessed as soon as possible. Early
intervention and the correct course of treatment are essential to
get them back
to classes as soon as possible. The student is responsible for contacting
their instructors when they miss classes.
What if my son or daughter needs emergency
care?
In the event that the illness/injury needs emergency care, your student will be transported to the ER by ambulance. Students are required
to carry their own primary insurance plan. After the student has been treated and stabilized, PUC will assess if the incident meets payment requirements. (Please refer to the exclusion list at Health Services.) PUC funds are to be used as a secondary payer after the primary plan has been billed. Our capped amount per incident is $2,000.
Should my son or daughter receive the meningitis
vaccine?
It is strongly recommended that they receive the vaccine
if they are an incoming freshman living in the dorms. It is not currently
federally mandated but many private and public institutions do require
it. At this time PUC does not require the vaccine.
Where can we receive the meningitis vaccine?
Any MD office or urgent care center should have this available.
Should my son or daughter have a local physician while attending PUC?
In most circumstances the college age population can be treated through
the Health Services department. Health Services has a physician available by appointment through his own office at a reduced rate. (These appointments must be made through the Health Services department to receive the discount.) Health Services has mid-level care provided by a physician assistant. If the physician or the physician assistant deem it necessary to refer to a specialist, the primary insurance will again be billed and PUC will assist as a secondary payer up to the capped amount of $150 per incident.
Is there a fee for students to be seen in
Health Services?
In most cases there will be no fee for services provided.
You may see billing for minor procedures performed or prescription
medications used. In these cases the student's account will be billed.
If the student accesses outside medical services without prior authorization
the fee for services will be paid in full by the student without
any
financial assistance from PUC.
What is there to do off campus?
There’s plenty to do whether it’s hiking and
biking or sightseeing and shopping, just get outside and experience
the beautiful Napa Valley, Bay Area and Gold Rush Country! Some ideas
of how to plan your time here can be found in Entertainment
Off the Hill. SPIRITUAL
Why choose a Christian college?
Objective facts should be the same wherever you go to
school. What makes all the difference in the world however is the
perspective those facts are viewed from. At PUC we explore the sciences,
humanities, the arts, and religion from a Christian faith base.
We don't sidestep the difficult issues and each student is urged
to carve out their own understanding, but the context in which we
educate is Christian. This learning environment can only take place
at a Christian college.
What help is available if my
son or daughter has spiritual needs or concerns?
The spiritual resources of PUC are rich and plentiful.
From the resident assistants in the dorms to college administrators
- there are students and adults who really care about the spiritual
life of your son or daughter. Energy, creativity and much prayer
go into providing opportunities for students to experience Christ
both in and out of the classroom. Small groups, worships, clubs,
church, service and outreach opportunities abound. All your student
needs is an open heart.
GENERAL
What about computers and Internet
connections on campus?
Wireless networking is available to all common areas
of the campus; the cafeteria, residence hall lobbies, some
of the
classrooms, and the library. This wireless networking allows students and faculty
access to the Internet from any computer
that has wireless network capabilities. The residence hall rooms
still utilize the wired network, which gives greater bandwidth
capacity.
PUC recommends that any student considering purchasing
a new computer for the school year, purchase a notebook
that has both wireless and a standard 10/100 network
adapter built in. This allows access to the network at increased
speed
from
a
dorm room and also utilizes the wireless network while in the classrooms
or common areas. For suggestions on purchasing a computer and other ITSS related information, see PUC Information Technology Student Information. If you have any questions,
please contact the ITSS (707) 965-7000.
Students also have access to computers at several locations
on campus. The library, business administration, computer science,
math, chemistry,
and psychology and social work departments have PC’s available.
The library has a few Macintosh computers available.
How do students find out about
jobs on campus?
Students seeking work on or off campus can check out Student
Employment for current job openings. Students must obtain a
Student Employment Authorization form from the Student Employment
office before starting on-campus employment.
How can students call home?
Each residence hall room is equipped with a single phone
jack. Students need to provide their own phones. Students are
responsible
for setting up their own long distance account with the college,
available on a pre-paid basis (similar to a calling card). On-campus
calls can be made without a long-distance service. Detailed information
is available at Information Technology, ext. 7000. Cellular phone users take note: Verizon is the only cell service that works in Angwin!
What are the dates for vacations?
The dates for school sessions and vacations can be found
on the Academic
Calendar.
What is the mailing address for students?
All incoming mail and packages are received by PUC’s
Mail Services and must be addressed as follows:
Your Name
Room # (for dorms only)
Dorm / Department
Pacific Union College
One Angwin Avenue
Angwin CA 94508
How can parents obtain
more information?
All parents of new students are encouraged to attend
a parent seminar on Thursday evening, September
20. A parent information booth will be in front of
the
Financial Administration building. PUC’s annual Parents’
Weekend is on October 19-21.
