WHAT TO DO FIRST
Know your classes. Print your schedule off of Lantern ( lantern.puc.edu )
making note of the department, course number, and section for each
class. Bring your schedule with you to the Bookstore or have handy when
you place your order on-line.
There are two ways to buy your books from the PUC Bookstore:
1. Buy your books online. Two weeks before the beginning of each quarter
(except Summer), you can start buying books from our webpage. There are two
ways to buy books from the college webpage:
- Go to www.pucbookstore.com and
choose the books to buy one by one.
- Or from within Lantern, after you have
logged on, click on “order textbooks”. It will take you to a page
that shows all the classes you are registered for. Below the class list click
on “order Textbooks” and that will take you to a page that shows
all the classes and all the textbooks that you need for those classes. At this
time you can choose the books you want to buy and proceed with checking out.
2. Come to the Bookstore, choose the books you want and purchase them.
How will you be paying for your books?
Two weeks before the beginning of the quarter, PUC allows students to charge books and supplies
to their student accounts. Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted. American
Express is not accepted at this time. You may use these payment methods regardless of whether you purchase your books on-line, or come to the Bookstore.
Personal checks are allowed with a valid driver’s license,
state ID, or passport. Talk to your financial aid counselor if
you need help paying for your books. If you need to return a book during the Refund Period, bring in your books, and they will be processed for a refund. You will be given a Check Return Form, entitling you to return to the Bookstore 10 working days from the date on the check to receive your cash.
FINDING YOUR BOOKS
Familiarize yourself with the layout and organization of the textbook
section. All books are shelved according to the department they
are in. The names of the departments are shown on signs above
the shelves.
Within each department textbooks are shelved by course
number, not by class name. These numbers start with the lowest
course numbers on the bottom shelf. There are shelf cards for each
course giving details about the class and instructor.
Example:
Term 2005 PUC
Subject: MATH Term
Course No: 096
Instructor: Hilton,
George

NURSING STUDENTS:
The nursing books are shelved just like the rest of the textbooks.
This is sometimes a problem because most students identify nursing
classes by quarter and not course number.
For example: Third Quarter Nursing is actually NURS 125.
Sometimes a book will be identified as “OPT” for Optional (i.e.: a drug guide in Nursing; or it may say “One of These
Required”). This means that you can buy either of the books
listed (they are usually the same book with different ISBN numbers).
WATCH OUT!
Some departments have several different prefixes. For example:
PSYC 121 and SOWK 121 are both shelved in the Behavioral Science
Dept. They are two different classes! This is why it is important
to have your schedule when you buy your books.
Some classes have several sections, each one with different books.
Example: ENGL 101 has 7 different sections. In order to buy the
books for the correct class you need to know which section you
are in (See the example on the 3X5 card). This also happens with
RELB 120 & 121. (The Bookstore provides handy red cheat-sheets
for the English and Religion Depts. to help).
What to do if your book is stolen:
After you are sure you will be keeping your book, it is a good idea to put some identifying mark in your book. Circle a page number, or underline a specific word on a page. Write your name in the book, or write a special word on the edges of the book. Give us a call to report the theft, and give us a brief description of your identifying mark, and the ISBN of the book. We will flag that ISBN and keep a look out for it during buyback.
What to do if you bought the wrong books:
Even if you are careful, it is still possible for you to buy the
wrong book. If you find that you have bought the wrong book, don’t
worry. The Bookstore begins to accept the return of books that
are in their original condition and still in the shrink-wrap, if
applicable, on the second day of classes and ends on Friday that same week. All you need is your receipt
and student ID. Do not write in your books until you are sure that
you are taking the class, you will not be able to return your textbook
if it has been written in.
We hope this information has been helpful
to you.
