Term Abroad
In
the summer of 2005, students traveled to Italy to study "beauty"
in Florence, the birth place of the Renaissance. Florence,
with its rich history in painting and sculpture, provided
an ideal location for the class. Texts like Georgio Vassari's
Lives of the Artists were enhanced by visits to a wealth
of cathedrals and museums including: the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery,
Accademia Gallery, Brancacci Chapel, National Museum of the
Bargello, and museum of Leonardo Di vinchi. Taking a break
from High Renaissance art, the class also viewed Peggy Guggenheim's
private collection of Modernist art in Venice. Throughout
the month in Italy, students enjoyed day trips to Sienna,
Vinci, Assisi, Pisa, Lucca, San Giminiano, and other Tuscan
villages as well as a four-day trip to Rome. The 2006 Summer
Term Abroad will take place in Paris, France.
