Tues Journal #48 (Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word meaning "the principle of refraining from harming any living being"--AWAD. Is this possible in your life? Does living require harming other living beings?). Chpt. 14, "The Phrase." Read p. 422 paying close attention to the examples. Do ex. 4 (Directions: Copy down the prepositional phrases used as adverbs. For each, identify the adverb question it answers.) Do Diagnostic Test A, pp. 416-17 (Directions: Copy down the prepositional phrases. For each, identify it as adj or adv. For adj, also write down the word the phrase modifies. For adv, identify the adverb question answered. Ex: In the morning, I will collect the box of books. Answers: In the morning, adv, when? of books, adj, box).

Mon Spelling words for quiz on Wednesday (liberty to married). Journal #52 (My best day at ____. Who? What?). Chpt. 14, "The Phrase." Intro verbals, participles in particular. Notes on board. Begin participles worksheet. Read first section of wkst together, and complete sentences #1-10 in first section as a class. Do sentences #1-10 in second section independently.

Devise list of present and past participles, then create sentences containing modifying participles and participial phrases. Underline participles and participial phrases, and draw arrows from modifiers to nouns/pronouns modified [5 sentences with single-word present participial modifiers; 5 sentences with single-word past participial modifiers; 5 sentences with participial phrase modifiers, present and past]. No hmwk.

[Midterm grades due May 9.] Continue with verbals. Go over ex. 11 & 12 (group collaboration to select best example for each item in ex. 12). Can you dream up a sentence with . . .

  1. A participle modifying a gerund? (Ex: "exciting skiing," "boring golfing," "laughing coming from the room below," and "The diva's singing, spanning a range of almost three octaves, impressed even the most unmusical."
  2. A gerund that includes a participle within the gerund phrase?
  3. A gerund used as the OP (discussing a friend)?
  4. A gerund used as the PN (talking about a favorite sport or other activity)?
  5. A gerund phrase for the subject?

Hmwk: Complete the five sentences above. Prepare for a quiz over present participles and gerunds (on Thurs.).

Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (myth to observe). Sentence challenge: Can you create a sentence that contains all five phrase types that we have studied so far in this chapter? (adj phrase, adv phrase, past participle, present participle, gerund). Write out your best effort, double spaced, and submit by end of class. No hmwk.

Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (obtain to outline). Finish viewing The Count of Monte Cristo.
Hmwk: Compare The Count of Monte Cristo to other underdog stories we have read this year. Write at least a page comparing this story to one other story (or more, as appropriate). Show how the stories are similar or different in terms of the underdog theme. Due at beginning of class Tuesday.
Tues Due: 1 page comparing The Count of Monte Cristo to other underdog stories. Share, revise, and edit writing.
Hmwk: Word process writing. (Keep handwritten draft to turn in with word-processed draft.) Create a polished, carefully proofread document. Use 12 pt. font, double space, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins all around. Due Thursday.
Thurs Due: word-processed draft (and previous written draft) of Count of Monte Cristo/underdog story comparison paper. Continue with verbals. Intro infinitives. Notes on board. Do ex. 13 together in class.
Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz. Do ex. 14, p. 437. Directions: Write out the complete infinitives and/or infinitive phrases. Identify each as noun, adj, or adv. If noun, identify the sentence noun position. If adj, identify the noun modified. If adv, identify the adv question answered.
