Mon Syllabus. "Getting to Know You" assignment, paying special attention to qstns. #7 & 8. "E-mail to Teacher" assignment.
Hmwk: Read syllabus for quiz on Thurs. Complete "E-mail to Teacher" assignment (due by midnight Thurs). Put together English class notebook as per instructions in syllabus ("Additional Materials" section). Write out answers to the following qstns in your own handwriting: a) Why are you enrolled in honors? b) What are your expectations for English 10 Honors? c) How will you be a better person because you have taken English 10 Honors? (Due Tues)
Tues Due: answers to yesterday's hwmk qstns. Discuss answers to yesterday's hwmk qstns. Discuss questions about expectations for English 10 Honors.Journal #1 (Reflect: "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."--Abraham Lincoln). Read aloud in class: "The Owl Who Was God," by James Thurber.
Hmwk: Write out answers to these Study Guide qstns about "The Owl Who Was God." Be prepared to discuss your answers to the questions.

Due: answers to the Study Guide qstns. Discussion. Brainstorming and prewriting on qstns: Can too many of the people fool you too much of the time? Can you fool too many of the people too much of the time? Can you fool yourself too much of the time? (Thanks to Tim H. for the 3rd qstn.) Think of stories, examples, situations, events, etc. that can illustrate your response ot one of the questions. Write a rough draft answer to one of the questions.
Hmwk: Complete handwritten rough draft answer to one the the questions. Due Thurs. Finish reading syllabus to prepare for quiz.

Hmwk: Complete thoughtful answers for #6-15, p. 59. Make rough draft list of pros and cons for "Debating Issues," p. 60. Due Tues.
Tues Due: answers for #6-15, p. 59; rough draft list of pros and cons for "Debating Issues," p. 60 (on separate sheets of paper). Reading quiz: "Two Kinds." Discussion of "Two Kinds." Explaining by storytelling.
Hmwk: "Two Kinds" rough draft. Pick one side of the issue and support it with a story or several shorter incidents.
Wed

Board notes on paragraph intros and story supports (to file in "Notes" section of English notebook). Revision of story: underline (or write) a topic sentence at the beginning of the story that alerts the reader to your opinion on the issue. Do an analysis of your story: What needs to be left out? What needs to be added? What needs to be changed to make the topic sentence true, accurate, fair, and inclusive. Make necessary revisions.
Hmwk: revise and word process the next draft of your story. Due Thurs. Study for spelling quiz.

Thurs Due: word-processed draft of story. Spelling quiz. Peer review stories for topic sentences and supports. Read aloud to group. Listeners identify topic sentence and give feedback about how well story details fit topic sentence. Finish compiling/decorating English notebook.

Mon Labor Day: No Classes!
Tues Spelling words for quiz on Thursday (ad nauseam to alluring). Read quietly: "Chee's Daughter" in lit text, starting on p. 22.
Hmwk: revise and word process final draft of last week's story. Staple final draft on top of all previous drafts--arranged in reverse chronological order. Due Wed.
Wed Due: final draft (and all previous drafts) of last week's story. Finish reading "Chee's Daughter." Do qstns #1-11 & 14, p. 35, in class.
Hmwk: study for spelling quiz. Finish "Chee's Daughter" qstns--if not finished in class.
Thurs Due: "Chee's Daughter's" qstns--if not finished yesterday. Journal #4 (How would your life be different if our culture were matrilineal? Mon Journal #5 (9/11, Publication Workshop). Read "The Interlopers" (lit text pp. 269-274). Spelling words for quiz on Wednesday.
Hmwk: Creative writing options: either write a sequel to this story (what happens next?) OR go back about 3 paragraphs and write a new, different ending. Rough draft due Tues.
Tues Due: rough draft of creative writing option. Journal #6 (Reflections on this morning's worship about making decisions to bring peace and calm to your life) Share creative writing with classmates. Review dialogue punctuation rules on board. Revise and edit story options.
Hmwk: study for midterm test. Word process and proofread final draft of "The Interlopers" ending or sequel.
Wed Due: word processed "The Interlopers" story ending or sequel (and all previous drafts). Spelling quiz. In-class test review activity:
  • Develop a list of characters for each story. Write a statement of significance for each.
  • Identify main conflict/s in each story.

Hmwk: Think about your favorite peaceful place--real or otherwise.
Tues

[Football guys and volleyball girls gone] Journal #11 (Your most peaceful place--real or otherwise). Review how atmosphere is created in a story. Students identify sections of the story that create the atmosphere of the Anglo-Indian school and Santha's home in "By Any Other Name." Write a description of your favorite place. Include "descriptive details" to convey the atmosphere of the place.
Hmwk: complete descriptive paragraph. Show, don't tell!

Wed

Share descriptive paragraph with a friend to get feedback. The reader should be able to see clearly what you feel about the place without your having to express the feelings directly--just by the descriptive details you incorporate. Mark specially effective passages with a star or smiley face. Create visual representation of your descriptive paragraph.
Hmwk: study for spelling quiz.

Thurs

Journal #12 (Rainy day). Spelling/vocab quiz (assuage to becoming). Complete visual representation of descriptive paragraph. Turn in paragraph and visual. Read story aloud.

Thurs

Spelling/vocab quiz (belies to brawn). Intro to "soph-o-more" stories (stories with wise people and fools). Read aloud two Isaac Bashevis Singer stories: "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser" and "The Mixed-Up Feet and the Silly Bridegroom." While listening to the stories, make notes answering these two questions: 1) How do fools and foolishness feature in these stories? 2) How does intelligence feature in these stories?
Hwmk: Read "The Needle," p. 420 (blue lit text). Add to notes about the role of foolishness and/or intelligence in this work.

Week of October 16 to 20 (End of First Quarter)
Mon Words for spelling/vocab quiz on Thursday (brevity to chameleon). Watch video: "I'm a Fool" (based on a short story by Sherwood Anderson). While watching the video, add to your notes from yesterday about the role of the foolishness and smarts in this work.
Hmwk: What makes someone a "fool"? What makes someone "wise"?
Tues Journal #13 (foolishness/wisdom: qualities necessary to both). Class discussion on foolishness and wisdom, qualities necessary for both definitions, and notes on board. Test review. [Test fodder: "sophomore" stories and "Catch the Moon" and "By Any Other Name."]
Hmwk: study for test.
Wed No class: AP World History, instead.
