Week of August 21 to 25
Mon Syllabus "Getting to Know You" assignment, paying special attention to qstns. #7 & 8. "E-mail to Teacher" assignment.
Hmwk: Read syllabus for quiz on Thurs. Complete "E-mail to Teacher" assignment (due by midnight Thurs). Put together English class notebook as per instructions in syllabus ("Additional Materials" section).
Tues Journal #1 (Reflect: "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."--Abraham Lincoln). Read aloud in class: "The Owl Who Was God," by James Thurber. Ten minutes prewriting and brainstorming on two qstns: Can too many of the people fool you too much of the time? Can you fool too many of the people too much of the time? Can you fool yourself too much of the time? Pick one of the questions, and write an answer.
Hmwk: Complete your rough draft answer to one of the questions. Due Wed.
Wed Due: rough draft answer to "The Owl Who Was God" qstn. Journal #2 (How is school going for you so far? How is this year different than last year--already? What are some things you want to have happen this year that didn't happen last year? What steps are you taking to make sure they happen?) Review of topic sentences--using bag and label visual aid. [Sample paragraphs with good topic sentences] Work on topic sentences for paragraphs. Revise Thurber paragraphs adding topic sentence--as needed.
Hmwk: complete revision. Word process Thurber paragraph. Underline topic sentence in revised paragraph. Staple final draft on top of rough draft/s. Due Thurs. Finish reading syllabus to prepare for quiz.

Mon Journal #4 (Pushy parents: good? bad?). Read aloud in class: "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan in lit text, pp. 49 to 58.
Hmwk: Think about the pros and cons of "Debating Issues," p. 60. Draw up a list of notes for and against each side.
Tues Journal #5 (What was your opinion of Jing-mei's mother and the extremely ambitious goals she set for her daughter? Explain.). Spelling words for quiz on Thursday (abandon to actress). Answer qstns #1-10, p. 59.
Hmwk: "Two Kinds" rough draft. Pick one side of the issue and support it with a story or several shorter incidents.

Due: "Two Kinds" rough draft. Discuss "Two Kinds" issue. Board notes on paragraph intros and story supports. Analyze your "Two Kinds" rough draft using board notes. Make additions, corrections, amendments--as needed.

Hmwk: Creative writing options: either write a sequel to this story (what happens next?) OR go back about 3 paragraphs and write a new, different ending. Rough draft due Tues.
Tues

Due: rough draft of creative writing option. Journal #8 (Reflections on this morning's worship about making decisions to bring peace and calm to your life). Share creative writing with classmate partner. Revise and edit story options.

  • Does your ending continue in the style, feel, tone of a story (dialogue, description, characters)--showing rather than telling what happened next?
  • To what extent does your sriting continue the feel of Saki's?
  • Is your ending interesting? compelling? funny? unique?

Hmwk: Finish needed revisions and word process (12 pt. Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins all around, 2X spaced, name, class & date in upper-right corner) final draft of "The Interlopers Continued" creative writing.

Wed

Due: word processed final draft of "The Interlopers Continued" creative writing. (Staple all previous drafts in back.) Spelling quiz (design to forty). In-class test review activity:

  • Develop a list of characters for each story. Write a statement of significance for each.
  • Identify main conflict/s in each story.

Journal #12 (Your most peaceful place--real or otherwise). Read "Atmosphere," p. 486. Students identify sections of the story that create the atmosphere of the Anglo-Indian school and Santha's home. Write a description of your favorite place. Include "descriptive details" to convey the atmosphere of the place.
Hmwk: complete descriptive paragraph. Show, don't tell!

Wed

Share descriptive paragraph with a friend to get feedback. The reader should be able to see clearly what you feel about the place without your having to express the feelings directly--just by the descriptive details you incorporate. Mark specially effective passages with a star or smiley face. Create visual representation of your descriptive paragraph.

Thurs Watch video: "I'm a Fool" (based on a short story by Sherwood Anderson). While watching the video, add to your notes from yesterday about the role of the fools and/or foolishness in this work.

Mon Journal #13 (Untimed: According to the "sophomore" stories, what does "smart" look like? Define a "fool." Do you agree with the stories' definitions? Who is smart in "The Needle"? Who is foolish? Do "intelligence" and "foolishness" only apply to academics? Explain.) Discuss journal thoughts with notes on board. Spelling words for quiz on Thursday (sincerely to women).
