Week of October 17 to 21 (Beginning of Second Quarter)
Mon Due: missed spelling words written out 25X. Journal #19 (Untimed: New Quarter's Resolutions). Spelling pre-test of words for quiz on Friday (their/they're/there through weird, including weather/whether and words from student writing). Read aloud: Knee-high Nigel, Laurence Anholt. Hmwk: begin preparing for spelling quiz (Fri).
Tues Journal #20 (First quarter: What went well? What needs to be better? How can you make the necessary changes?). Parts of speech pre-test. Noun notes on board (to be filed in "Notes" section of English notebook. No hmwk.
Thurs

Journal #21 (I'm really tired of . . . . I'm really mad about . . . . I'm really excited about . . . . I'm really satisfied with . . . .). Review "Nouns" in green grammar book. Do aloud: ex. 2 & 3. Write sentences:

  1. about school activities. Include one common noun and one compound common noun.
  2. about a city or town. Include one common noun and one compound proper noun.
  3. about a person. Include one concrete noun and one abstract noun.
  4. about food. Include one common noun and one compound common noun.
  5. about another country. Include one proper noun and one collective noun (name of a group of people or things. Ex: herd, tribe, mob, trio).

Tues Due: pronoun worksheet. Journal #24 (Your weekend, sports, an adventure, "I'm working on . . .") Go over pronoun worksheet. Reminder of spelling words for quiz on Friday (words from student writing). Notes on lie/lay. Hmwk: Write four sentences using forms of lie correctly and four sentences using forms of lay correctly.
Thurs Journal #25 (What is something you like about yourself? What do you do well?) Practice quiz over pronoun worksheet and lie/lay notes. Intro adjectives. Schoolhouse Rock: Adjectives. Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz.
Fri Journal #26 (What is your favorite room in your home and why?) Spelling quiz (words from student writing). Read aloud: pp. 1-5 from Sleeping Dogs Don't Lay: Practical Advice for the Grammatically Challenged, by Lederer and Dowes. No hmwk.

Do Writing Application C and Rev. Ex. A. Hmwk: Complete Writing Application C and Rev. Ex. A. Study for quiz on nouns, pronouns, adjectives (and lie/lay) (Tues).

Journal #28 (What is your favorite time of day/day of the week/month of the year and why?) Noun, pronoun, adjective (and lie/lay) quiz. Read pp. 354-357. Exercises 9, 10. Hwmk: complete ex. 9 & 10. Due Thurs.

Due: ex. 9 & 10. Journal #29 (What is the best way to treat meddlesome people?) Go over ex. 9 & 10. Schoolhouse Rock: Verbs. Do ex. 11. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz. AND Using five friends' names as subjects, write two sentences for each friend. Make sure one contains an action verb and the other contains a linking verb. Underline the verb in each sentence and label it "action" or "linking" at the end of the sentence. Due Fri.

Fri No Class: Power Week Schedule (NB: homework and quiz that were scheduled for today have been postponed until Mon. On Monday we will have this week's spelling quiz, and hmwk will be collected.)

Mon Journal #43 (Christmas food traditions). Spelling words for quiz on Thursday (piece to sacrilegious). Finish reading: "A Christmas Memory," by Truman Capote. Do response questions (p. 417, #1-5, 7-9, 12 and "Write a paragraph explaining why this is a 'Christmas' story.") Hmwk: complete "A Christmas Memory" response questions. Due Tues, at the beginning of class. [Enrichment: learn more about fruitcakes, read a humorous history of fruitcakes, and pick up a recipe.] [Here's a link to a different website for "A Christmas Memory."]

Due: "A Christmas Memory" response questions. Review: Christmas stories. Test review questions:

  1. For each story, write a paragraph summary including the main plot points.
  2. List main characters for each story.
  3. Consider all of the stories: What do they share? What common themes are important to the idea of a "Christmas" story? (Do NOT say, "They are about Christmas"! Think deeper.)
  4. Two are animal stories, two are stories about humans, and one is told by a tree.
    1. What makes an animal story a "Christmas" story?
    2. Do human "Christmas" stories have to contain different elements than a non-human story?
  5. According to these stories, what is Christmas all about?
