Tues "E-mail to Teacher" assignment. Read "The Open Window," H. H. Munro. Discuss story. Hwmk: write a story with a surprise entrance. Set the scene, describe the entrance and the effect on those present. Complete "E-mail to Teacher" assignment before class next Mon.
Thurs Due: entrance story. Continue pointing out important features of syllabus. Literature survey and student input on curriculum content. Hmwk: Complete "E-mail to Teacher" assignment before class next Mon.
Fri Question and answer session on English 9/Honors situation. Journal #1 (My first week at Prep). No hmwk over weekend.
Week of August 29 to September 2
Mon Due: "E-mail to Teacher" assignment. Journal #2 (Is it working for you? What is going well? What do you need to work on?). Spelling words for quiz on Friday (acceptable through conscience). Read "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (pp. 116-120). Hmwk: Finish reading "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty".
Tues Journal #3 (A Walter Mitty daydream for yourself). Syllabus quiz. Using today's journal as a writing prompt, write a Mitty-style daydream for yourself. Hmwk: Have rough draft version ready for class on Thurs. Enrichment Option: include two or more daydreams. This will allow you to more fully develop the sequence in your frame story--as Thurber does in the original Walter Mitty story.
Thurs Due: rough draft of your own Mitty-style daydream. Journal #4 (A different Walter Mitty daydream for yourself--or someone else). Read Walter Mitty stories aloud in groups, revise as necessary to include "elements that link the daydreams with the narration of the story." Hmwk: Revise, polish, type up, and illustrate your Walter Mitty daydream for bulletin board. Due Fri.
Fri Due: Walter Mitty daydream assignments. Journal #5 (Daydream for animal! Be creative.). Spelling quiz (acceptable through conscience). Share Walter Mitty daydream assignments in class. No hmwk.
Week of September 5 to 9
Mon No class: Labor Day.
Tues Spelling words for quiz on Friday (conscientious through guarantee). Journal #6 (Options: Labor Day wknd, How is school working for you? Juggling extra-curricular activities with academics). Read "The Leap" (pp. 57-63). Read "Flashback" on p. 64 and answer the 3 questions after the explanation. Hmwk: discover what the 5 W's and 1 H of journalism are. (Resource options: online search, encyclopedia, journalist, etc.) List 5 W's and H for the dramatic rescue at the end of "The Leap" to bring to class Thurs.
Thurs Journal #7 (What are your strengths?). Check off and discuss homework. (Complete reading and "Flashback" qstns--if not completed yesterday.) Using the 5 W's & 1 H in the first paragraph, write a newspaper article about the last time the narrator's mother saved her life (from the burning house). Hmwk: study for spelling quiz (Fri.).
Fri Journal #8 (Football, volleyball, publications workshop, your choice). Spelling quiz: conscientious through guarantee. Continue on "The Leap" newspaper article. English notebook check this weekend. Your 3-ring binder (with 5 labeled dividers and containing all journals, handouts and notes assigned so far) must be on shelf in English classroom. No hmwk.
Week of September 12 to 16
Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (harass through license). Journal #9 (Your contributions: How are you contributing to Prep? to your friends' lives? to your family?). Do qstns #1-5 & 13-15. Distribute graded spelling quizzes. Write out missed spelling words 25X each. (Due Thurs.) Hmwk: word process, revise, edit, and proofread newspaper article about dramatic rescue at the end of "The Leap." Enrichment: Can you make your final draft LOOK like a newspaper article? Final draft due Tues.
Tues Due: final draft of "The Leap" newspaper article. Journal #10 (We're at the halfway point for first quarter. What do you want to continue doing and do better? What do you need to change NOW to end first quarter more successfully? How are you going to make that change?). Share articles in class. Complete questions assigned yesterday. Hmwk: complete writing out missed spelling words 25X each. Due Thurs.
Thurs Due: missed spelling words written out 25X each (from quizzes #1 & 2). Journal #11 (Senior Presentation, Freshman Presentation?). Reminders about classroom/school rules. Write a humorous story incorporating as many spelling words as possible. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz.
Fri Spelling quiz (harass through license). Read aloud Katherine Paterson's The King's Equal. No hmwk.
Week of September 19 to 23
Mon No Class: Community Service Activity
Tues

Journal #12 (The King's Equal or midterm grades). Review for test. Material to be covered on test: "The Open Window," "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "The Leap," spelling words (acceptable through license), and writing. Prepare review sheet:

  1. Develop a list of characters for each story. Write a statement of significance for each.
  2. Identify main conflict in each story.
  3. Identify the significance of the conflict to each character.
  4. Using returned spelling quizzes, develop list of words to which you need to pay special attention. (Remember that not all words were quizzed for #2 & #3.)

Papers returned in class. Put spelling quizzes into "Quizzes & Tests" section of English notebook. Put other papers into "Assignments" section. Do NOT throw any returned papers away! Hmwk: Complete review sheet (due before test on Thurs) and study for test.

Thurs Turn in review sheet. (Must be submitted before test to receive credit.) Midterm Test. Hmwk: study for midterm spelling quiz.
Fri Journal #13 (racing roly polies, working in groups, midterm tests). Midterm spelling quiz. Review of classroom procedures. No hmwk.
Week of September 26 to 30
Mon Journal #14 (Differences between 8th & 9th grade). Spelling words for quiz on Friday (words from student writing). Return papers. Begin unit of stories from various cultures about underdogs. Read aloud: "The Brave Little Tailor." Hmwk: finish reading "The Brave Little Tailor." Write out words missed on 9/23 spelling quiz 25X.
Tues Due: missed spelling words written out 25X. Reading quiz. Journal #15 (Have you ever been an underdog, i.e., expected to lose? Reflections on "The Brave Little Tailor"). Read: the story of David and Goliath (I Sam. 16 & 17). Hmwk: finish reading the story of David and Goliath from the Bible (I Sam. 16 & 17).
Thurs Reading quiz. No journal (fire drill!) Read "Jack and the Beanstalk". (Enrichment: If you scroll upwards after you have followed the link to "Jack and the Beanstalk", you will be able to read two other versions of this tale. Why do we have variations on this tale? Do all three versions have the same theme/moral?) Hmwk: study for spelling quiz and reading quiz (both on Monday).
Fri Journal #16 (What do you think are the themes/morals of the stories we've read so far?). Read the Charles Perrault version of the Cinderella tale, "Cinderella; or, The Little Glass Slipper." No hwmk. (Enrichment: browse above and below this version of the Cinderella tale to read other versions. What do you think the Cinderella tale is really about? Is it about bravery? rags to riches success? beauty? goodness? nobility of spirit? surviving adversity? Do different versions have different moral/themes? Why might parents want their children to understand the story of Cinderella?)
Week of October 3 to 7
Mon

Spelling quiz (words from student writing). Reading quiz over "Jack and the Beanstalk". Spelling words for quiz on Friday (lightning through precede). In groups of 3-4, discuss themes of stories read so far. Compile list of benefits of understanding and appreciating the stories we have read so far. ("The Brave Little Tailor," David and Goliath, "Jack and the Beanstalk," and Perrault's "Cinderella") Hmwk: read Esther 1 & 2 from any version of the Bible.

Tues Reading quiz: Esther 1 & 2. Journal #17 (Health Fair, Rio football, your weekend). Continue reading the story of Esther. Hmwk: continue reading the story of Esther in the Bible. (Enrichment: Read an essay with modern applications of the Esther story: "What Queen Esther Knew: Business Strategies from a Biblical Sage," by Connie Glaser. What do you think about Glaser's ideas? Do they fit with the themes/morals of the Cinderella tale? Do they fit with your understanding of Esther's story?)
Thurs Reading quiz: Esther, ch. 9 & 10. Journal #18 (How is the story of Esther an underdog story?) Read: Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. Continue Monday's list of benefits of understanding and appreciating the stories we have read so far. (Add Esther and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters to the list.) Hmwk: study for spelling quiz.
Fri Spelling quiz (lightning through precede). Read: "Fair, Brown, and Trembling" (an Irish version of the Cinderella tale). Read: Sleeping Ugly, by Jane Yolen--a tale in which the ugly girl gets the prince and the beautiful princess gets just what she deserves. No hmwk.
Week of October 10 to 14 (End of First Quarter)
Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (principal/principle through supersede). Test review questions about underdog stories. Hmwk: Begin your own review of the stories for test.
Tues Continue test review questions about underdog stories. (Due before the test.) Write out missed spelling words. (Due Mon, Oct. 17). Hmwk: study for end-of-quarter test and study for spelling quiz. Click here for worksheet to help with principal/principle usage. Answers available.).
