Week of August 17 to 19
Wed Journal #1 (new beginnings), syllabus, "E-mail to Teacher" assignment (due before class on Tues, Aug. 23.), "Getting to Know You" assignment. Hmwk: read syllabus to prepare for quiz (Tues), and complete "E-mail to Teacher" assignment before Tues, Aug. 23.
Thurs Vocab: sophomore. Journal #2 (What do you think about "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time"?) Read "The Owl Who Was God" by Thurber. Ten minutes prewriting and brainstorming on two qstns: Can too many of the people fool you too much of the time? Can you fool too many of the people too much of the time? Pick 1 qstn and write answer. Hmwk: write a rough draft answering one of the questions. Due Fri., Aug. 19.
Fri Journal #3 (Have you ever been fooled?). Create topic sentences for paragraphs. Peer review of paragraph structure. No hmwk.
Week of August 22 to 26
Tues Journal #4 (Student government, class office, etc.). Syllabus quiz. Class officer nomination and voting. No hwmk.
Wed Journal #5 ("Pushy" parents: good? bad?). Read aloud in class: "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan in lit text, pp. 49 to 58. Hmwk: Think about the pros and cons of "Debating Issues" p. 60.
Thurs Journal #6 (Compile list of pros and cons). Discussion of journal ideas. Explaining by storytelling. Hmwk: "Two Kinds" rough draft. Pick one side of the issue and support it with a story or several shorter incidents.
Fri Board notes on paragraph intros and story supports. Analyze your "Two Kinds" paragraph using board notes. No hmwk. English notebook check this weekend. Your 3-ring binder (with 5 labeled dividers and containing all journals, handouts and notes assigned so far) must be on shelf in English classroom.
Week of August 29 to September 2
Tues Spelling words for quiz on Friday (acceptable through conscience). Rd. "Chee's Daughter" aloud (pp. 23-34, lit text). Hmwk: complete final draft of "Two Kinds" paragraph. Due Wed.
Wed Due: "Two Kinds" paragraph. Journal #7 (Wk of Prayer or respond to a character in "Chee's Daughter."). Complete reading of "Chee's Daughter." Answer questions #1-11, 14 in class. Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz.

No class meeting: Week of Prayer.

Fri Spelling quiz (acceptable through conscience). Journal #8. Read "The Interlopers" (lit text pp. 269-274). No hmwk.
Week of September 5 to 9
Tues Spelling words for quiz on Friday (conscientious through guarantee). Journal #9. Complete "Chee's Daughter" qstns. & write out missed spelling words 25X. Hmwk: finish writing out missed spelling words.
Wed Collect spelling words. Journal #10 ("The Interlopers" or sports). Do qstns # 1-8 (p. 275) in class. Creative writing options: either write a sequel to this story (what happens next?) OR go back about 3 paragraphs and write a new, different ending. Hmwk: complete rough draft of ending/sequel.
Thurs Journal #11 (What do you think are your strengths?) Edit, share, and revise your story ending. Hmwk: word process, revise, edit, proofread final draft of "The Interlopers" ending or sequel.
Fri Due: word processed "The Interlopers" story ending or sequel. Journal #12 (Review this past week as a dress rehearsal for future weeks. How are we going to assure happiness and success going forward?) Spelling quiz: (conscientious through guarantee). No hwmk.
Week of September 12 to 16
Tues ITED test for sophomores: no English class.
Wed Journal #13 (Are you doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?). Read "Civil Peace" (lit text, p. 39) and do qstns #1-7 & 11-15 in class. No hmwk.
Thurs In-class test review activity: Develop a list of characters for each story. Write a statement of significance for each. Identify main conflict in each story. Identify the significance of the conflict to each character. What is/are the theme/s for each story? Are they implied or stated? Hmwk: Prepare for test, Wednesday.
Fri Test: stories we've read so far and writing paragraphs. No hmwk. Have a great time in Yosemite!!!

Tues Spelling words for Friday (words from student writing). Journal #14 (What did you learn about yourself in Yosemite?). Pass back graded papers, and insert them into English notebooks. Review features of well-written paragraphs. Hmwk: Write a rough draft paragraph answering: What was the main/most important thing you learned about yourself on the biology trip to Yosemite? Illustrate with a story. Rough draft due Wed.
Wed Due: rough draft of Yosemite paragraph. Journal #15 (Yosemite, homework, football or volleyball, life!). Practice for spelling quiz. Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz (NB: quiz has been moved up to Thursday, NOT Friday!)
Thurs Spelling quiz (words from student writing). Read aloud Katherine Paterson's "The King's Equal." Hmwk: the final draft of Yosemite paragraphs is due next Tues. We will work in class on topic sentences, "showing" (vs. "telling") illustrations, and concluding sentences.
Fri [Rio Football Tournament] Journal #16 ("The King's Equal": What is missing in your life right now? What do you have in abundance?). Paragraph revision. Peer review for topic sentence, story illustration [telling (blah stating of facts) vs. showing (vivid storytelling!)], and concluding sentence. Hmwk: revise and word process Yosemite paragraph for next Tues.
Week of October 3 to 7
Tues Due: final, word-processed draft of Yosemite paragraph (with rough draft attached behind). Journal #17 (Rio, weekend). Spelling words for quiz on Friday (harass through license). Read: "Catch the Moon," pp. 63-69. No hmwk.
Wed

Finish reading "Catch the Moon." Response options (pick one): qstns. #1-5, 6-8, 10 & 13 (p. 70) OR "Art: Luis and His Logos" OR "Creative Writing" OR "Character" (p. 71). Hmwk: complete "Catch the Moon" option. Due Thurs.

Thurs

Collect "Catch the Moon" hmwk. Journal #18 ("Catch the Moon": sequel, theme, importance of relationships). Read "By Any Other Name," pp. 479-485 aloud in class. Read "Atmosphere," p. 486. Students identify sections of the story that create the atmosphere of the Anglo-Indian school and Santha's home. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz (harass through license).

Fri

Spelling quiz (harass through license). Journal #19 (Your most peaceful place--real or otherwise). Review how atmosphere is created in a story. Write a description of your favorite place. Include "descriptive details" to convey the atmosphere of the place. The reader should be able to see clearly what you feel about the place without your having to express the feelings directly--just by the descriptive details you incorporate. (Bring paragraphs to class on Tues.) No hmwk.

Week of October 10 to 14 (End of First Quarter)
Tues

Journal #20. (WOPAM or end of the quarter). Complete descriptive paragraphs. Share with a friend to get feedback on specially effective passages. (Mark these with a star or smiley face.) Optional: write on WOPAM "Thank You" banner. Write out misspelled words 25X (due Wed). Hmwk: Create visual representation of your descriptive paragraph (Due Thurs).

Wed Due: any missed spelling words (from Friday's quiz) written out 25X. Journal #21 ("Like what s/he says matters?"). Peer review on descriptive passages. Answer questions on board. Hmwk: revise descriptive writing based on peer feedback and answers to assessment questions.
Thurs Due: descriptive paragraph with visual representation. Read aloud two Isaac Bashevis Singer stories: "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser" and "The Mixed-Up Feet and the Silly Bridegroom." While listening to the stories, make notes about the role of fools and/or foolishness in the stories. Hwmk: Prepare notebooks to be graded over this weekend.
Fri Read aloud "The Needle," p. 420 (blue lit text). Classroom work period. English notebook check this weekend. Your 3-ring binder (with 5 labeled dividers and containing all journals, handouts and notes assigned so far) must be on shelf in English classroom.
