Mon Syllabus, text choices list, "E-mail to Teacher" assignment (due Fri.), read "Shock Tactics" by Saki & discussion.
Wed Journal #1, grammar pretest, "Getting to Know You" assignment, "The Lumber Room" by Saki. Hmwk: assess book collection at home for the books we have selected for this class.
Fri Read aloud "The Hen" by Saki. Discussed Saki themes. Hmwk: look at all three stories and develop a list of similarities (due Mon., Aug. 23).
Week of August 23 to 27
Mon Syllabus quiz. Discuss Saki similarities lists. Begin Merchant of Venice. Distribute textbooks. Read from Lambs' Tales from Shakespeare aloud in class. Discuss play and process for studying it. Hmwk: read intro to play in the version you have.
Wed Begin watching The Merchant of Venice. Hmwk: read essay handouts distributed in class.
Fri Continue watching The Merchant of Venice. Hmwk: complete essay handout reading.
Week of August 30 to September 3
Mon Journal #2. Continue watching The Merchant of Venice. Hmwk: Make a relationship chart incorporating all of the characters in the play (due Wed).
Wed Journal #3. Collect relationship charts. Finish watching The Merchant of Venice. Discussion and notes: What is the play about? Is TMOV anti-semitic? Why or why not? Hmwk: pick a passage (minimum 20 lines) to memorize and present dramatically to the class on Fri, Sept. 10. Pairs are OK (40 lines minimum, 20 line each).

Journal #4. Notes on the board about the writing process. Introduction of essay topics (pick one):

  • Is TMOV anti-semitic?
  • How is Christianity portrayed in TMOV?
  • Pick a theme in TMOV and discuss its portrayal in the play. (Theme ideas: prejudice, hatred, friendship, love, revenge, women's role/s in society, justice, mercy, divided loyalties, letter of the law vs. spirit of the law, etc. Can you think of another one?)

Fri Journal #5. Dramatic presentations of TMOV passages. Hmwk: Pick essay topic to begin work on in class on Monday.

Journal #6. Intro to Turnitin.com discussion forum. Sign up in class using these instructions. Pre-writing/thinking/planning stage on TMOV essays. Begin watching "In Search of Shakespeare" (Michael Wood). Return old assignments. Re-do relationship charts (due Monday). Hmwk: Read chapter section by Michael Wood distributed in class (pp. 204-6, Shakespeare). Complete thinking/planning, pre-writing stage of TMOV essay (for Wed.). By Friday, make an initial posting the Turnitin.com discussion forums for this class. (Use standard American English, and revise and proofread before you click the "Submit" button. Suggestion: you may want to use a word processing program to compose your reply and then copy and paste it into the reply box--after you have proofread it and run the spell checker.)
Wed Check off thinking/planning stage of TMOV essay. (Repeat of memorization presentations for better grades.) Work on TMOV essay outlines in class. Continue watching "In Search of Shakespeare." Hmwk: complete outlines to bring to class on Friday. Complete discussion forum postings.

By Friday, complete your one new initial posting or two new response postings to the discussion forum (assigned last Fri).
Wed Journal #8. Check off detailed outlines. Work on rough drafts in class. Continue watching "In Search of Shakespeare." Hmwk: Complete additional postings to discussion forums. E-mail exact thesis statement to rdibben@puc.edu. Bring complete rough draft to class on Monday

(Base revision on peer review and your own thoughts on how to make your essay stronger.) Final draft of essay due next Monday. (You are invited to conference with the teacher during this week before writing your final draft.)

Wed Journal #10. Check off second rough draft. Peer review of second rough draft. Proofreading and editing notes. Review for TMOV test, Fri. Continue viewing "In Search of Shakespeare." Hmwk: study for test and complete final posting to discussion forum.
