Week of January 10 to 14
Mon Journal 28 (New beginnings: new year, new semester, new goals, new . . .?). Pass back final exams. Grammar review: verbs & prepositions. Hmwk: 1) Review syllabus for quiz. 2) Study spelling words for quiz. 3) Complete "Identifying Verbs Worksheet 2."
Wed Journal 29 (Academic performance last semester: what I liked, what I'm going to change and how). Collect "Identifying Verbs Worksheet 2." Spelling quiz. Syllabus quiz. Class activity: inventing and sharing silly/funny complete subjects and predicates. Hmwk: Write 10 sentences. Underline complete subjects once. Underline complete predicates twice. Circle simple subjects and verbs (include helping verbs). Due Wed.
Week of January 17 to 21
Mon No School: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Wed Journal 30 (What I wish people really understood about me: what I like, what I care about, and what I really like about life). Collect sentences (from Wed.) Do chpt. 13 grammar exercises: 1-4. Go over exercises in class. In pairs, do ex. 5 & 6 (two names on one paper). Turn in before end of class. No hmwk.
Week of January 24 to 28
Mon Journal 31 (Why I'm really glad I live here and not somewhere else OR why I wish I lived somewhere else and not here). Dictate spelling words. (You must check the spellings of the words AND make sure you know how to use them in sentences. Any words missed on the quiz will need to be written out 25 times each.) Do Rev. Ex. A, p. 383 on your own (as a check of your understanding of the chapter so far). Subject and predicate notes on board. (Add to Notes section of your notebook.) Return previous spelling quiz. Begin ex. 7 to 12. To be continued on Wed. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz. Write out any words missed on the previous spelling quiz 25 times each. Due Wed.
Wed Journal 32 (My best winter thought and/or memory). Spelling quiz. Continue with ex. 7 - 12 in green grammar text. Use class notes from Monday, and explanations and samples in the text to assist you--if you have questions. At the end of the class period, turn in what you have completed. If you finish before the end of class, read quietly (or work on other homework) while your classmates finish their work. Hmwk: write out 25 times each any words missed on the spelling quiz. Due Mon.
Week of January 31 to February 4
Mon

Journal 33 (If you hadn't chosen to be here, where would you be? Dream. Imagine!). Collect spelling words (from previous two quizzes) written out 25 times. Dictate spelling words for Wed. Review of subjects in odd places. Do Rev. Ex. B. Intro complements. Notes on board (add to Notes section in English notebook). Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz. Check the spelling of the words and know how to use them in sentences.

Wed Journal 34 (Sports). Spelling quiz. Continue with intro to complements. Do ex 15 -17 aloud in class. Do ex 19 & 20 aloud in class. Write out ex. 21. Hmwk: Do ex. 18 (Using each of these as a complement, write five sentences. Underline the subject once, the verb twice, and circle the complement in each sentence. Words: pencil, bellhop, shrewd, sluggish, clown.) Complete ex. 18 (if not completed in class). Write out words missed on spelling quiz 25 times.
Week of February 7 to 11
Mon No School: Staff Development Day.
Tues (Monday Classes) Collect hmwk (ex. 18 sentences--if not completed last Wed.) & spelling words written out 25 times (if required). Journal 35 (What do your "toys" do when you are not there? Make up a story about one of your toys.). Do complements worksheet. No hmwk.
Wed (PUC Basketball Tournament) Journal 36 (Basketball, etc.). Do ex. 22 & Rev. Ex. E. (New directions for assignment: 1) Cross out prepositional phrases. 2) Underline verbs (including helpers) twice. 3) Identify verbs as VI, VT, or VL. 4) Circle all complements. 5) Identify complements as P.A., P.N., D.O., or I.O. Hmwk: complete ex. 22 & Rev. Ex. E. Due Mon.
Week of February 14 to 18
Mon Check off ex. 22 & Rev. Ex. E. Go over exercises. Journal 37 (Valentine's Day spectrum: National Single Awareness Day to Mushy! Mushy! Mushy!). Dictate words for spelling quiz on Wed. Do ex. 23 & 24 (directions: write down and identify the complements--p.n., p.a., i.o., d.o.), Rev. Ex. F, and ex. 25. Hmwk: complete exercises (if not completed in class). Study for spelling quiz.
Wed Journal 38 ("Me": aspects of my life). Spelling quiz. Posttests 1 (A & B) & 2. Hmwk: Chapter review worksheet (Do the 3rd section. We'll do the 1st and 2nd sections in class on Tues). Due Tues.
Week of February 21 to 25
Mon No School: President's Day
Tues (Monday Classes) Journal 39 (What is grace? What does grace look like?). Write out missed spelling words 25X. Complete Posttests (if not completed last class period). Do 1st & 2nd sections of chapter review worksheet. Hmwk: complete pink chapter review worksheet. Due Wed.
Wed Check off completed chapter review worksheet. Journal 40 (Looking forward: snow day, spring break, trips? etc.). Go over worksheet, sharing sentences and checking answers. Review for test. Mon Test: Parts of the Sentence. Read aloud: "The Dog That Bit People," by James Thurber. No hmwk.
Wed No Classes: Prep Ski/Snow Day
Week of March 7 to 11
Mon Journal 41 (3rd quarter retrospective: What did you do well? What do you wish you had done differently? Plot for success for 4th quarter). Robert Louis Stevenson's writing about the Napa Valley: "The Silverado Squatters," "In the Valley," and "The Petrified Forest." No hwmk.
Wed (Choir in England) Watch The Count of Monte Cristo (103 min., 1974). No hmwk.
Spring Break. Classes resume March 28.
