Mon Journal #2, syllabus quiz, read p. 18 in lit text, read "The Open Window" (pp. 19 to 21), do qstns. #1-14 on p. 22
Wed Journal #3, read "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (pp. 116-120) aloud, do qstns #1-14 (p. 121). Hmwk: Creative Writing: Mitty Steps Up to Bat, p. 122. Bring neat, revised, edited version to class on Monday.
Week of August 30 to September 3
Mon Journal #4, read Walter Mitty stories aloud in groups, revise as necessary to include "elements that link the daydreams with the narration of the story." Nominate class officers. Work on class banner. Hmwk: Type up and illustrate your Walter Mitty daydream for bulletin board (on display for Back-to-School Night)
Wed Journal #5. (Vote for freshman class officers.) Collect and display Walter Mitty daydream assignments. Vote for freshman class officers. Read silently "Before You Read," p. 44, and read aloud "The Lady, or the Tiger," pp. 45-50. Do qstns #1-15 (skip #12 & 13). Hmwk: "Creative Writing, And the Decision Is . . . ," p. 52. Read instructions carefully. Write out your ending, proofread and revise to make your story meet the requirements listed in the assignment description, and then send it in an e-mail message to teacher (due by Fri., Sept. 10--even though we have no class next week). Those without access to e-mail can hand write or word process the assignment and hand it to the teacher by Fri.
Week of September 6 to 10
Mon No class: Labor Day.
Wed No class: Teacher In-Service Day. Submit homework for Sept. 1 (Wed.) in an e-mail message by Fri., Sept. 10. Those without access to e-mail can hand write or word process the assignment and hand it to the teacher by Wed.
Week of September 13 to 17
Mon Journal #6. Spelling words for Wednesday (on board). Write out words 5X, use in a sentence, and write out definitions for pairs. (Due by end of class.) Turn back old assignments. Revise "The Lady or the Tiger" endings as per comments on papers. Hmwk: complete revision. (Due Wed.)
Wed Journal #7. Collect final drafts of "The Lady or the Tiger" ending. Spelling quiz. Read "The Leap" (pp. 57-63). Do qstns #1-5 & 13-15. Read "Flashback" on p. 64 and answer the 3 questions after the explanation. Turn in by the end of class. Hmwk: Write a news report about the last time the narrator's mother saved her life (from the burning house). Use the 5 W's & H to start the newspaper article. Due Mon. Print out your grades in RENweb, have your parent/guardian sign the paper, and put it in the "Assignments" section of your notebook. I'll check it for credit on Monday.
Week of September 20 to 24
Mon Journal #8. Check off grade sheets from RENweb. Check off newspaper articles based on "The Leap" rescue. Peer review of newspaper article to check for 5 W's & H. Revise article, re-write, and submit before end of class.
Wed (Partial class because of ITED testing) Journal #9. Noun scavenger hunt. No hmwk.
Week of September 27 to October 1
Mon Journal #10. Circle proper nouns in your journal entry. Nouns, continued. [Schoolhouse Rock: Nouns] Noun test notes on board. Go back to your journal entry. Pick out 10 common nouns. Write them on notebook paper and demonstrate that they pass the noun tests. Complete Ex. 1, 2 & 3, p. 343 during class. Read pp. 346 & 347. Hmwk: Write 10 sentences about you and your friends. (Leave at least one space between each sentence.) Underline one noun in each sentence and write above it a pronoun that could be used to replace it. Due: Wed.
Wed Journal #11. Noun quiz. Collect hmwk from Mon. Review nouns. Intro pronouns [Schoolhouse Rock: Pronouns]. Pronoun notes on board. Do ex. 4 & 5 in class. Hmwk: Writing Assignment, p. 349. (Can be done as a paragraph rather than as minutes.) Due Mon.
Week of October 4 to 8
Mon Collect writing assignment homework. Journal #12. Review nouns and pronouns. Intro adjectives [Schoolhouse Rock: Adjectives]. Guidelines for grammar exercises. Read pp. 349-352, then do ex. 6 & 7, pp. 352-353, in class. Hmwk: complete exercises. Due Wed.
Wed Collect ex. 6 & 7. Journal #13. Use journal nouns for notes. Review of adjectives. Adjective notes (adjective sentence positions, "Pronoun or Adjective?" & "Nouns used as Adjectives") on board. Review Exercise A, pp. 353-354. Hmwk: Write out spelling words 10X each. Write out a definition for each word in the usage group and use it correctly in a sentence. Spelling words: spoke, lady, field, stinky, aggressive, annoying, scrumptious, squeak, superstitious, stationery/stationary, jewelry, rotten, received, lavender, sandwiches, mischievous, tired, greasy, sour. Due Mon, Oct. 11.
Week of October 11 to 15 (End of First Quarter)
Mon Collect spelling quiz preparation assignment. Spelling quiz. Journal #14. Noun, pronoun, adjective quiz. Verbs. [Schoolhouse Rock: Verbs] Hmwk: Using five friends' names as subjects, write two sentences for each friend. Make sure one contains an action verb and the other contains a linking verb. Underline the verb in each sentence and label it "action" or "linking" at the end of the sentence.
Wed English notebook check today! Collect homework sentences. Journal #15. Verb notes on board. Read pp. 354-357. Exercises 9, 10, 11. No hmwk.
