Week of January 17 to 21
Mon No School: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Wed Journal 37 (What really BURNS me up: am I a victim? can I do anything about it?). Collect spelling words written out 25 times. Green text, chpt. 1 quiz (open book). Hmwk: think about a childhood place about which you have strong feelings.
Thurs Journal 38 (My childhood place: what does it look like? smells? sounds? happenings? people?) Dictate next spelling words. (You need to check spelling, definitions, etc. before studying--to make sure you study the correct words!) Essay #1 assignment. Read sample essay: "A Boy's View of Playland." Begin thinking/planning stage for childhood place essay. (Distribute cluster sheets--as needed) Hwmk: Complete thinking/planning stage. Try to have MORE than you will eventually need.
Fri Check off thinking/planning stage. Distribute Essay #1: Example (assignment sheet). Move into organization mode. Work on organization during remainder of class period. Hmwk: complete rough organization. Be ready to share your organization with a classmate.
Week of January 24 to 28
Mon Journal 39 (A really rough fast draft of one section of your essay. Focus on details.). Check off organization notes for Essay #1. Share organization schemes with classmates. Discuss organization format. Get/give feedback on ways organization could be strengthened. Read aloud Anne Lamott's "The Crummy First Draft" to class. Hmwk: Write out improved, working essay outline. (Due Wed)
Wed Journal 40 (A really rough fast draft of another section of your essay OR continue the section you were working on on Mon. Focus on details.). Spelling quiz. (Any words missed will be written out 25 times each.) Begin drafting essay. Hmwk: draft at least two whole paragraphs before class tomorrow.
Thurs View "Bird by Bird with Annie: A Portrait of Writer Anne Lamott" (available at PUC library, VTR PS 3562 .A4645 Z5). Hmwk: be ready to have checked off 2nd organization scheme and two paragraphs of rough draft on Fri.

Mon Journal 41 (If you hadn't chosen to be here, where would you be. Imagine!). Continue drafting (by hand or on computer). Hmwk: Be ready to have COMPLETE rough draft checked off on Wed.
Wed Journal 42 (Sports). Check off COMPLETE rough draft (1st draft). Self-evaluation of rough draft structure. Hmwk: make necessary changes to rough draft. Move to word processor--if you haven't already. On Thurs bring a word-processed version of rough draft.
Thurs Check off word-processed rough drafts (2nd draft). Peer review of rough draft structure. Hmwk: make necessary changes to rough draft based on peer review. Print out new, clean copy to bring to class Fri.
Fri Check off new rough drafts (3rd draft). Peer review paragraph examples. Sign up for conference time. Hmwk: revise rough draft for conference.
Week of February 7 to 11
Mon No School: Staff Development Day.

Valentine's Day. Journal 43 (Spectrum: National Single Awareness Day to Mushy! Mushy! Mushy!). I Cor. 13. What little kids think about love. Write a Valentine's Day poem, rap, or song stanza to your valentine (dog? car? yourself? another?). Must be appropriate for public consumption. Hmwk: complete Valentine's Day poem, rap, or song stanza.

Wed Collect Valentine's Day poem, rap, or song stanza. Journal 44 (Title: "Me"; Aspects of my life: social, psychological, spiritual, academic, athletic, historical, political, interpersonal, etc.). Writing for college applications. What is the thesis statement for you? Resources: CollegeBoard.com "College Essay Writing Tips," UC Berkeley "The Personal Statement" Hwmk: Think of the two to four most important parts of your life. Write a thesis statement for you that reflects these. AND, if you have any college admission essay materials, please bring them to class to share.
Thurs Check off personal thesis statements. Collect any college admission essay materials. Journal 45 (When do I feel free? loved? successful? fun?). Create thesis statement quadrant on colored paper. (Divide paper into quadrants. Write thesis statement in center. Write four ideas--from journals #44 or 45 or from something else--into the quadrants. Work from details to a thesis statement OR work from a thesis statement outwards to details.) Hmwk: continue working on thesis statement for your life and quadrant diagram.
Fri Journal 46 (peace and tranquility). Check progress on thesis statements and quadrants for college admissions essay practice. Arrive at a sense of closure for the week. No hwmk.
Week of February 21 to 25
Mon No School: President's Day
Tues (Monday classes and senior interviews with PUC enrollment counselors.) Journal 47 (What is grace? What does grace look like?). Begin reading aloud "Babette's Feast" by Isak Dinesen. Hmwk: research Isak Dinesen (pseudonym of Karen Blixen). See if you can discover something that your classmates won't know. Write out results of research in your own handwriting and include the source/s. Be prepared to share what you've discovered.
