Mon Journal #4, syllabus quiz, read "Tobermory" in Brit Lit textbook. Homework (due Wednesday): compile a list of characteristics of Clovis (suggestions: behavior, appearance, interpersonal skills, likes/dislikes, beliefs, political ideas, etc.) Support characteristics with references to the stories.
Wed Journal #5. Check off lists. Intro character analysis, sample character analysis, organize list into outline. Hmwk: write complete outline for character analysis (due Thurs).

Journal #6. Check each outline. Begin blue worksheet to help you progress to the rough draft stage. Hmwk: complete blue worksheet.

Mon Journal #8, peer review of character analysis essay structure. Hmwk: write second draft based on peer review suggestions (due Tues.).
Wed Journal #9, revision and editing, peer review of essay revision and editing. Hmwk: write final draft and bring essay on disk to class (due Thurs.).
Thurs Journal #10. Intro Turnitin.com. Submit essays to Turnitin.com. Turn in final drafts in pocket folder with all required components. [Check Sheet (pdf)]
Fri Journal #11. Show Turnitin.com originality reports. Read aloud: "People Who Want to Sue Me," pp. 27-29. Do qstns #1-10 (skip 6) in class.

Mon No class: Labor Day
Tues (1/2 hour class after short assembly) Journal #12. Turn in pre-work and rough drafts for character analysis essay. Heads up on the British authors project.

Fri Journal #13. Turn back Clovis Character Analysis essays. Note on board: commas & apostrophes. All students must conference with teacher about essays before re-writing. Re-writes due next Friday, Sept. 17.
Week of September 13 to 17
Mon Journal #14. Intro to British Authors Project. Review of standard format for academic essay (diagram on board). Students make 1st and 2nd choices for Authors Project during class. Hmwk: work on Clovis essay re-write if you have had your conference.
Wed "Mother Tongue" video (from The Story of English series). Take notes on video (modelled on board by teacher). Hmwk: work on Clovis essay re-write if you have had your conference.
Thurs Journal #15. Check notebooks. Read pp. 34-4-, 42, & 43 in lit text. Hmwk: Complete Clovis essay re-write and submit to Turnitin.com ("Clovis Re-do"). Print out grade sheet from RENweb and have parent/guardian sign it. Then put the printout into the "Assignments" section of your notebook for checking on Monday.
Fri Due: Clovis essay re-writes. (Turnitin.com re-submission must be done today.) Journal #16. Finish checking notebooks. Read "The Schartz-Metterklume Method," H.H. Munro aloud.
Week of September 20 to 24
Mon Journal #17. Check RENweb printouts (signed by parent/guardian) in "Assignments" section. Read Beowulf, pp. 44-51, aloud. No Hmwk.

Week of September 27 to October 1

Journal #20. Intro Beowulf mini-project. (Due Friday, 10/1) Choose one option:

  • Write a parody (See p. 67.)
  • Pick 15 to 20 lines to memorize. (Pay attention to "Recitation," p. 61, for pointers.)
  • Write "Hometown Hero Saves the Day!" or "A Hero's Handbook on Living," p. 61
  • Create a visual representation of a scene from Beowulf.

Decide on project during class time. Hmwk: begin working on Beowulf mini-project.

Wed Journal #21. Venerable Bede presentation (L. Hein) or Bede handout. The Ecclesiastical History of the English People selection, pp. 80-83. Hmwk: continue working on Beowulf mini-project.
Thurs No Journal. Read "Caedmon" by the Venerable Bede, pp. 83-84. Class time to work on Beowulf mini-project. By end of class, turn in paper with your name, Beowulf project option, and a report of how far along you are on the project. Hmwk: complete Beowulf mini-project for presentation Friday.
Fri Journal #22. Beowulf mini-project due today! Presentations & recitations during class session. No hmwk.

Mon Journal #23. Complete presentations of Beowulf mini-projects. Listen to beginning of the Prologue to The Canterbury Tales in Middle English (handout). No hmwk.

Mon Journal #26. Sir Philip Sidney presentation (B. McKinney). Read "The English Renaissance," pp. 199-206 and "The Sonnet," pp. 208-209. Hmwk: No hmwk if you have done all of the reading. If you missed class on Friday, get caught up. Complete all reading.
Wed English notebook check today! [There IS time for a journal because we are only watching part 1 of the video] Video: The Story of English: "A Muse of Fire," part 1 (Take notes on the video to put into your notebook in the "Notes" section.)
Thurs Journal #27. Sonnet reading day! Hmwk: write a sonnet about something that is important to you. Use a Petrarchan, Shakespearean, or Spenserian rhyme scheme. Word process the sonnet, and decorate and/or illustrate it. Due Fri.
Fri Collect sonnets. Journal #28. Shakespearean Sonnet video. (Make notes on sonnet handout.) No hmwk.
