"The Phrase" Review

Posttest 1-A, Identifying and Classifying Prepositional Phrases

Directions: The following passage contains ten prepositional phrases. Underline each prep phrase and draw an arrow to the work that it modifies. Identify each as adj or adv.


New York City has a wealth of museums, both large and small. The first that


comes to mind is the American Museum of Natural History, which has


exhibits about almost everything. Human history and customs are shown,


and the world's many animals are presented in their natural settings.


Exhibits about both earth and space round out the offerings. This museum


is also special because of the Hayden Planetarium, which features shows


about the heavens. The entire complex is popular because it offers


something for everyone. The city's other museums, while also fascinating,


are more specific in their purposes.












Posttest 1-B, Identifying Verbals and Appositives

Directions: The following sentences contain verbal and appositive phrases. Underline each phrase completely and identify it as Part, Ger, Inf, or App.

    • If the phrase is functioning as a modifier (participles and some infinities), draw arrows to the words modified and/or identify the adjective or adverb question answered--as appropriate.

    • If the phrase if functioning in a noun position (gerunds and appositives), identify which noun position.

  1. Riding our horses in the field will be fun.

  2. Knowing the danger, I waved to warn them.

  3. To make good tacos, use fresh tortillas.

  4. Until reading that article, I wanted to be a distance runner.

  5. The camp counselor working in the stables made us clean the stalls.

  6. First, Jon tackled the pile of CDs and DVDs lying near his unused computer.

  7. John's first discovery, a real shock, was that the CDs were outdated.

  8. The DVDs were worse; left by visiting friends, most did not even belong to John.

  9. John realized that his broken computer was the culprit.

  10. By repairing the computer, John could give himself a reason to update his music and movie collection.

  11. Trained in electronics, John began to work and soon saw the problem.

  12. After a satisfying morning, John had a working computer but a room no cleaner than before.

  13. His sister didn't help by crying out, "Mom's coming to see how your room looks!"

  14. Quickly picking the pieces of computer detritus off the floor, John greeted his mother by playing a CD on his computer.

  15. Although pleased that John had done such a fine job with the computer, Mom nevertheless insisted on his cleaning the room before he did anything else.
