Getting into Medical School: A Planning Guide for Minority Students
This book is available from Betz Publishing. For information call 1-800-634-4365. You may also call the publishers, Williams & Wilkins Publishers at 1-410-528-4000.
"Getting into Medical School: A Planning Guide for Minority Students was conceived and authored by a group of 13 minority medical students during their tenure at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The result is a culturally savvy guide to the resources and pathways available to minority students, as well as the obstacles that can bar them from their desire to practice medicine. Written by students for students, Getting into Medical School speaks to its readers with a 'been there, done that' familiarity both unusual and refreshing to the career planning guide genre. The authors address all of the considerations critical to developing a curriculum vitae that will be attractive to medical school admission committees, with the important difference that this text approaches the topic from the point of view of the special needs of underrepresented minority students, rather than discussing these important issues as an aside appended to the end of a chapter. The text includes appendices with information on summer enrichment programs for minority students, postbac programs, medical school tuition, and a health professions career guide."

Meeting the Challenge of the MCAT : A Test Preparation Guide, by Evelyn W. Jackson, Ph.D., Shirley McGlinn, M.S. and linda Herrold, M.S.
There is a lot of confusion about how to handle what often seems like the monumental task of taking the MCAT. To our dismay, we have discovered that some students view the MCAT as a mysterious entity, or even worse, some masterminded plan to trick them. To others it is simply overwhelming. These views leave students anxious and searching for tricks to beat the test in order to exert some control over their future. We believe the information in this manual can help alleviate some of the anxiety and clear up some of the mystery associated with preparing for the MCAT.
Our objectives are to persuade you that preparing for and taking the MCAT are manageable tasks and, secondly, to provide some guidance on how to handle the tasks in an effective way. We hope to convince you to view the MCAT as a challenge, a challenge you can meet. We encourage you to take control and expend the necessary efforts to ensure that you will be successful. Thus our title, Meeting the Challenge of the MCAT.

Updated November 22, 1999
All premeds that are applying to medical school this school year for entrance into medical school in August of 2000 must have a committee recommendation from Pacific Union College. This committee meets about three times each school year, once in October, once in January, and once in May. You must request a recommendation from the Medical Recommendations Committee. This is accomplished by going to Dr. Douglas' Office (Academic Dean) and making such a request. You need to make this request before October 10, 1999. Loma Linda and most other medical schools require this recommendation before they will send an acceptance letter. They begin their acceptance process in late November.
This is the last day to register for the MCAT exam given on April 16, 2000. Because you will be gone from campus during Spring Break, it is recommended that you register for this test prior to leaving campus.
MCAT exam is given. You must register for it by March 10, 2000, in order to take the test. It is recommended that you register for this test prior to leaving for Spring Break.
For those Juniors that are planning to apply for Early Decision, the Medical Recommendations Committee will be meeting the first of May to make Early Decision recommendations. Go to Dr. Bell's office in the back of Graf Hall and request a recommendation. Dr. Douglas' secretary will have the proper forms for making this request.
Juniors, pick up your AMCAS application packet from the Counseling Center before you leave for vacation. The electronic version (AMCAS-E) of the application is on diskette and can be obtained from the Counseling Center also. You may download the AMCAS-E from the Internet at http://www.aamc.oprg/stuapps/admiss/amcase/start.htm.

Although September 1 is not the deadline for applying to medical school, it will serve you well to have your AMCAS application in the mail by September 1. Allow at least a week to complete the application. The personal essay is probably the most time consuming. Giving this part of the application adequate time will produce a quality essay that will put you at an advantage. After you send in your AMCAS applications, AMCAS sends it on to the schools of your choice, and then the schools of your choice send back a secondary application and recommendation forms. This all takes time and you want to allow plenty of time for the process to occur. Rushing at the last minute doesn't put you at an advantage. If you have your AMCAS application in by September 1 and you are timely in getting your secondary applications in as well as the recommendations, you file will be complete for the first rounds of the acceptance committee when they begin their work in November. With this, you could hear from Loma Linda as to your acceptance status as early as late December.
