John Sexton's Photography Workshops offer an exciting combination of instruction in the aesthetic and technical considerations involved in making expressive photographs. The workshops provide an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in an intense experience pursuing excellence
in the craft and art of photography and include directed field sessions, darkroom demonstrations, portfolio reviews and discussion. Participants receive instruction and inspiration from master photographers of distinctive
abilities. The workshops are intended for the individual who is seriously committed to improving their photographic skills and personal vision.
I am most excited by the workshops we are offering in 1997. Not only will I be repeating a number of popular workshops, but this year I will be instructing, along with Philip Hyde, a "dream-come-true" workshop: the Grand Canyon River Expedition. Teaching photography reminds me of the apocryphal story about the elderly gentleman on a street corner in New York City who, when asked by a passerby, "Do you know how to get to Carnegie Hall?" replies, "Why of course, practice, practice, practice!" The instructors I have the pleasure to teach with in 1997, Ruth Bernhard, Philip Hyde and Ray McSavaney, have been cumulatively practicing photography for a period of time longer than the entire history of the medium! They each practice photography because they love it, and they love to share their experience with others and encourage them to practice. These fine photographers are superb instructors, and are willing to share all they know. It is my hope that each of the 1997 workshops will inform the participants, as well as inspire them to practice the art and craft of photography!
Everyone involved in the program shares the same desire for creating an atmosphere of excitement, while simultaneously providing you with the knowledge and motivation you need to transform your excitement into expressive photographs. All of the workshops offer a combination of instruction in the aesthetic and technical considerations involved in making expressive photographs. The exploration of ideas and concepts, rather than dogma, will be emphasized in communicating information, thoughts, and perceptions in a comfortable, non-competitive environment.
Each workshop provides an opportunity for the participants to immerse themselves in an intense and enjoyable experience while pursuing excellence in the craft of photography. All of the workshops are intended for the individual who is seriously interested in an exploration of photography and who is committed to actively participating and working at improving craft, personal vision, and direction.
These workshops offer opportunities to receive instruction and inspiration from photographers of distinctive abilities, and are structured to allow for an intimate atmosphere, conducive to learning, sharing, and creativity. Directed outdoor photography sessions, portfolio reviews, informal discussions, along with instructor presentations and demonstrations, will be included in all workshops. I am looking forward with great anticipation to participating with some of you in the 1997 workshop program!
