Sophomore Assessment for Theology Majors

The process by which a theology major is admitted to PUC's Ministerial Studies Program includes the following elements.

During the winter quarter of their sophomore year theology majors utilize several testing instruments provided by PUC's Counseling Center to assist them in personal evaluation and preparation for further professional study and training. These may include the 16PF, Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis, a Self-Assessment Inventory, and others.

The student next meets with Counseling Center personnel to discuss what has been learned through the tests and then also meets with a local pastor to further explore the results of their Self-Assessment Inventory as well as their interest in and readiness for the upper division Ministerial Studies Program.

The Religion Department faculty receive brief summaries of the results from the tests and consultations. This material is combined with a review of the student's academic performance and other indicators of growth in an effort to compile as complete a profile as possible regarding the student's personal and academic development. All of this gives the student and his/her advisor a valuable foundation for subsequent counseling and mentoring.

As the concluding step in this process, the student submits an application for admission into the Ministerial Studies Program. The department faculty, in the light of personal interaction with the student and the material that has been developed through the testing and counseling sessions, make a decision regarding admission to the program and continued study leading toward pastoral/evangelistic and teaching ministries. The department's decision and recommendation are given to the student in written form.

Admission into the ministerial studies program is granted on the basis of satisfactory completion of the prescribed battery of tests and counseling process, regular academic standing, and an average GPA of 2.5 or better with no serious deficiencies in any given area.
