General Education Requirements

  1. Foundations of Learning  (15 hours minimum)
    • Rhetoric and College Writing (ENG 101-102) 2 courses
    • Oral Communication (Speech) 1 course
    • Reasoning from Data (Introduction to Statistics) 1 course
    • Intermediate Algebra, or higher math 1 course (No credit)

  2. Human Identity in Cultural Contexts (11 hours minimum)
    • Historical Contexts (History) (8 hours minimum) 2 courses
    • Psychology / Exceptional Children (fulfilled by major)

  3. Insights of the Imagination (6 hours minimum) (2 courses)
    • Literature (fulfilled by major)
    • One course chosen from the following:
      • Music (must be a “history” or “appreciation” course)
      • Art (must be a “history” or “appreciation” course)

  4. The Natural World (4 hours minimum)
    • Science course with a lab 1 course

  5. Revelation, Belief, and Action (6 hours minimum) fulfilled by major

  6. Health and Fitness (2 hours minimum)
    • General Nutrition (required cognate for major)

  7. Practical and Applied Arts (2 hours minimum)
    • Word Processing 1 course or Proficiency
  8. General Education Electives (22 hours from above categories):  *
    • Course work you have taken beyond the basic requirements listed above must be distributed over at least four of the seven areas above and may not include more than ten quarter hours in any one area. Additional areas within these seven categories are listed below and can be used to fulfill the General Education elective hours:

    1. Human Identity in Cultural Contexts
      • Philosophy
      • Social Sciences (Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, Sociology)
      • Foreign Languages

    2. The Natural World
      • Mathematics

    3. Practical and Applied Arts
      • Practical Arts, Information Management, Management of Personal Finance, Personal Skills

*The typical student will need to complete 15-20 credits of GE Electives to earn 68 GE credits total
