Career Counseling | Career Exploration

Choosing a career is like piecing together a puzzle.  Input from family and friends, interest and personality inventories, paid and volunteer life experiences, and prayer are integral components in finding a career about which you feel passionate.  PUC has various resources available to assist you in your search for a career.

CAREER INVENTORIES

  • The CAREER FINDER is a free 18-question test designed to match you with careers you might enjoy.
  • The STRONG INTEREST INVENTORY is a comprehensive test designed to identify occupational themes and careers you might enjoy.  Cost:  $20.  Plan one hour for the test, one hour for interpretation with a counselor.
  • www.careerway.com/sponsors/puc - CAREER WAY is an extensive online career tool to help you explore your skills, interests, and values.  Cost:  $27.95 - which includes a three-month subscription to their site at a 30% discount for linking through PUC.  It's well worth the investment.
  • www.ncsu.edu/careerkey/you/ - Sign in, then choose "Take the Career Key Measure" for an excellent free career test that provides lots of information about various careers.
  • www.edonline.com/collegecompass/ - Choose "Careers & Majors," then "Help – Choosing a Career" for a free career test.  Then choose "Careers and Majors Index" for information about specific careers and how to receive training.
  • http://online.onetcenter.org/ - Choose "Skills Search" for a skills inventory that links to detailed information on matching occupations.  This is an excellent site.
  • www.jobstar.org - Choose "Free Online Career Tests" under "Career Guides" for a variety of fun and useful tests and information.

PERSONALITY TESTING

  • The 16 PF (Personality Factors) is an extensive personality test. Cost: $20. Plan one hour for the test, one hour for interpretation with a counselor.

  • www.advisorteam.com/user/ktsintro.asp - This is a free 70-question test to identify your character type. Although they ask you to pay for a more complete report, the mini-report you get for free is still interesting.

CAREER DAY

  • Thursday, November 10, is the 25th Annual Career Day, planned especially for you! Career Day will begin with Colloquy at 10:00 a.m.

Over 50 consultants will be available in the Dining Commons, from 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. to discuss a wide range of career options. The opportunity to reality test an occupation, is an invaluable tool for determining if you are selecting an occupation that will meet your personal goals, expectations, life style, and value system. Career consultants can answer these significant questions in choosing a career. Each of the academic departments has invited career consultants to represent the fields PUC graduates enter after graduation. In past years, students have made connections with career consultants that led to employment offers.

Take time to plan ahead and come prepared to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity Career Day represents. Below is a link for a handouts on Making the Most of Career Day and Informational Interviewing and Networking. Take a moment to read these practical tips and make a plan for what you want to get out of Career Day this year.

INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS (JOB SHADOWING)

  • A great way to discover whether you are well suited for a career is to "shadow" someone working in that field.  It can be as comfortable as going to work with a relative or friend, or as daring as looking up a number in the yellow pages and asking if you can visit someone at a particular company.

INTERNSHIPS

  • Internships (paid or unpaid) are a great way to explore working in a certain field. Many internship opportunities are available directly through the major academic departments.  Go to PUC Academic Departments Page.
  • www.monstertrak.com - A wide variety of postings made available only to participating colleges.  Choose "Search Jobs & Internships"; then find PUC under "college and university career centers."  Type "PUC" in the password box if necessary, then hit the search box next to "monster.com entry-level search" at the bottom of the page.
