Chemistry Department Chemical Hygiene Plan (.doc file) Basic Rules and Procedures 1) Lab instructors a) Wear Safety glasses, lab coats, footwear covering the toes, and gloves when appropriate. b) Ensure students of wearing appropriate safety barrier (goggles, gloves, etc). c) Ensure students are dressed appropriately for lab (covered toes, long pants). d) Monitor student's laboratory progress by circulating. e) Ensure that every lab in session has at least one supervisor/TA present at all times. f) Monitor hazardous waste containers and change or notify appropriate personnel as needed. g) Monitor disposal of chemicals as wells as broken apparatus. h) Lock doors to labs after lab hours. 2) Fume hoods a) Run during all labs. b) Use all liquid chemicals inside fume hoods. 3) Showers and Eyewashes a) Tested every month by stockroom personnel, or TA. b) Alert all workers and students of their location. 4) Stockroom a) Wear lab coats. b) Wear gloves when dealing with: organic solvents, Strong acids, bases, oxidizers, and reducers, washing dishes. c) Wear eye protection when appropriate. d) Use fume hood when dealing with strong acids, bases, or noxious chemicals. e) Dispose of broken apparatus in appropriate containers. f) Know that MSDS's are located in the stockroom on the counter near the front door. g) Know how to use MSDS. Chemical Procurement, Distribution, and Storage 1) Chemical procurement will be carried out by stockroom and laboratory assistants under the direction of the faculty and stockroom supervisor. 2) Chemical Distribution will be directed by stockroom personnel and Faculty and Staff. 3) Chemical Storage will be directed by Stockroom supervisor. a) Acids b) Bases c) Solids d) Oxidizers e) Reducers and highly toxic f) Organic solvent g) Potential explosives Environmental Monitoring Housekeeping, Maintenance, and Inspections Medical Program 1) If anyone is injured, fill out an accident report. 2) If ingested or feeling sick after contact should be referred to Health Service, (Poison Control at (800) 876-4766). 3) If substance comes in contact with eye, flush eye for 15 minutes and refer to Health Services. call Poison control/911. Personal Protective Apparel and Equipment 1) Wear long pants and shoes that cover toes. 2) Tie long hair back. 3) Avoid loose clothing. 4) Wear eye protection and gloves when appropriate. Records Signs and Labels 1) Label everything containing chemicals. 2) Do not leave unlabeled chemicals anywhere. 3) Door signage should indicate chemical storage. Spills and Accidents 1) Contact Faculty or Staff in charge. 2) See First Aid section for accidents. Training and Information Waste Disposal 1) See Faculty or Staff Supervisor. 2) Note "Hazardous Waste Catagories" sheet. |
