Family Ministries
Description: Family Ministries specifically aims to work with
the children of families in which one or more parents are in jail
or whose homes are otherwise unstable or even nonexistent. We
seek to bring these kids into a loving and positive environment
by bringing them to church, teaching them good morals and
character, and allowing them to have some fun in a very safe place. Most
of all, we seek to help them develop a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ.
Towards this end, we spend an entire day with the kids from breakfast
to Sabbath School and church, lunch, and a fun afternoon activity,
whether it be a picnic, day at the park, swimming, or a nature
hike. We need people of all talents and dispositions, not only
to befriend and mentor kids, but to help with new ideas and activities
that we can help them develop discipline, character, and skills.
Some of our activities from last year include hiking at Mt. St.
Helena, a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore, and holding monthly
children's churches, which featured a puppet show. Some of our
plans for the future include campouts, Pathfinder-style afternoon
activities, and more teaching in general. We are dreaming
of setting up a tutoring program to help these kids succeed in
school, but it can't happen without YOU.
Mission Statement: Our goal is to give kids from
broken homes a chance to experience love, stability, friendship,
and a chance to know Jesus through church, activities, but
most of all, relationships with people who care about them and
want to help them grow.
Call: We need loving, committed college students
who are willing to be a big brother or big sister for the year. We
certainly invite you to come and try it out--but most of all, we
hope that you can make a commitment to keep coming back, whether
it be weekly, biweekly, or monthly. The kids need stability
in their lives, and we hope that you can come and build trust, which
takes more than a week or even a month. One unique aspect of
Family Ministries is that we seek to build lasting friendships, and
you will see the same kids and adults throughout the year, and maybe
for years to come. You don't have to be the greatest with kids, or
the most talented talker – just be willing to play, act a little
silly, work hard, but most of all, share God's love with them!
