The Mission of the Department of Psychology & Social Work is to be a Christian community of liberal learning that affirms the values of diversity, free inquiry, responsible citizenship, and service to God and humanity. Toward these ends, the community imparts to the General Education student the insights into human nature and activity distinctive to the Behavioral Sciences. This community also prepares students at the baccalaureate level in the generalist framework for employment in the profession of Social Work, for graduate study in Psychology and Social Work, and for a wide range of professional careers that involve working with people.
The department expects that its faculty and graduates will demonstrate the following: 1) comprehensive knowledge of their discipline; 2) competence in information-gathering and synthesis; 3) high levels of skill in thinking critically; 4) high levels of skill in the use of spoken and written language; 5) high levels of interpersonal skill in intimate, social, and formal situations; 6) appropriate use of their knowledge and skills in practice; 7) commitment to ethics; 8) respect for the core Department values of Diversity, Inquiry, Citizenship and Service; 9) recognition of the moral tensions that exist between the professions and Christian communities, and 10) appreciation of the common values between the professions and the Christian faith.
